We had the good fortune of connecting with Amelia Gil and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amelia, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Being an outsider to the Permanent Makeup Industry myself not entirely too long ago, I can speak on behalf of my past lack of knowledge and say one thing I did not realize of this industry is how much it has evolved. Many people today think of Permanent Makeup as a harsh portrayal of makeup, maybe something one of their mature relatives still has from the 80s that has turned in color and aged less than desirably. I am happy to say Permanent Makeup has come a very long way from late 80’s tattoo parlors, and has evolved into more of a permanent enhancement for the modern person. Pigment colors use to be limited to dark brown for eyebrows, bright red for lips, and solid black for eyes – none of which held their true color over time. My pigment shelf where I work currently has over 60 different colors for lips, about 10 for brows, and ~6 for eyeliner – all of which are modified to hold true to color. I think it is pretty safe to say the industry has changed, and not too many people are aware of it. Though, most people are not unaware due to the lack of Permanent Makeup done today – but more so that they don’t even realize they’re looking at the face of someone who has it. Not only have the colors evolved, but the techniques and science behind the art as well. With the evolved techniques, I can create something extremely natural, something that about replicates makeup, and anything in between.
The days of red tattoo lips and old blue eyeliner are far gone…for the most part. Researching your artist and their work is something I highly advise before getting any treatment done. Just as the colors of Permanent makeup keep evolving, so does the education. Making sure to find an artist who believes in continuing their practice and education will lead you to beautiful enhancements with PMU!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Permanent makeup is my art, and as I wrote a bit about before the way I have learned permanent makeup has been through a modern lens catering to a wide variety of people. There are many things that excite me about doing permanent makeup and creating subtle, beautiful enhancements on people . One thing in particular that fills me with joy, is seeing people gain confidence. It is a beautiful thing to watch someone look in the mirror and feel such excitement and confidence over their new look, and know you were able to give that to them. It took a huge leap of faith, and countless hours of work and practice to get to where I am today. I have my mentor to thank for my knowledge, but my dedication is something I can proudly say has never fallen short. It was not easy, but it was, and continues to be, worth it. Overcoming challenges takes patience and much support, I am extremely grateful for my support system and I have overcome the challenges by keeping in mind that by doing so it makes me more resilient and prepares me for the next. There have been many lessons learned along the way – but one that has always stuck with me is that what doesn’t break me makes more stronger and more equip for the next.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have lived in the area for almost two years now but I have to say, I am not as familiar with the area as I probably should be. Heres what it would look like if I had a friend say with me for a bit: For entertainment we would have to go to Virginia Key beach to relax, Wynwood to drink, midtown to eat, and if it was during this time frame, the Van Gogh pop up to see.
A few of my favorite food spots that would be a must are: Love Life Cafe on 5th street, Pumarola near midtown, Mila on South Beach, and maybe Sugar Daddy for an ice cream night cap.
When we go out for drinks and music I would take them to Treehouse, ATV Records, or Club Space of course. I am not a huge brunch person, but bagels (Zaks of course) on the beach would have to be my iteration of a perfect end to a friend visiting me in Miami!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A huge Shoutout and thank you goes to my mentor, Carla Ricciardone, who owns Sculpted Studios and has taught me everything I know about Permanent Makeup. She is a huge inspiration to not only myself, but all of her students, and many who know her.
