We had the good fortune of connecting with JD Danner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JD, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
After spending a few years as an accountant in corporate America, I found the pressure to meet deadlines for monthly financial reports to be empty and soul crushing. I felt a restlessness to create and play music for my own sense of joy and healing aa well as to share that with others. I believe there is a power in music to move emotions and I wanted to make a legacy and difference in this world through my songs. So I put down my pencil and picked up my guitar…
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to use music in a philanthropic way. In doing so, I have had the opportunity to pen songs used in fundraising for organizations such as Women In Distress (aiding victims of domestic violence) and The American Cancer Society.
As a member of the LGBTQ community, I tour nationally to play at Pride events along with touring nationally and overseas to perform at military bases for our military men and women and their families. One of my proudest moments was being invited to perform my song, “Thanks To The Brave” at a Veteran’s Day half-time show for the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. Performing at Nashville’s legendary Blue Bird Cafe is also an achievement I am very proud of in my career. Each time I return to play there I am gratefully in awe to be on that stage.
In taking the journey to pursue my music there have been many trials and triumphs along the way. The music business is not for the faint at heart. You have to roll with the punches, have a thick skin and appreciate every minute along the way because I have found for every disappointment there is a great opportunity around the corner. An important piece of advice I would share is – check your emails often and always answer your phone! Opportunity doesn’t always ring twice… You never know when that email or call is gonna come along bringing the next great experience! This has happened to me so many times. It is not always the things we are chasing that are the best things to come to us. So many awesome opportunities that have come my way were things that I never even thought of pursuing.
Some things cannot be forced. When gigs and “the business” isn’t happening, redirect your focus and do something nice for someone else. Still, keep your mind and energy open to what God and the universe wants to send you. You. Will. Be. Amazed at what comes your way!
Most recently I have expanded my brand to include a podcast, In August 2020 with co-host Denise Warner we launched the podcast, called “Whiskey Rock Lounge” which is broadcast on MyLesbianRadio.Podbean.com. Dubbed “the most socially distanced podcast” with me in South Florida and Denise in London, UK., our guests include game-changer lesbians from comedians, actors and musicians to community activists. Each week they share their latest libations as they chat with these amazing women.
So, in taking the road to pursue my passion I have had many amazing experiences, I have the honor of meeting many amazing people and I have never looked back!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Some of the most fun hot spots to check out are in the downtown areas such as Atlantic Ave in Delray, Mizner Park in Boca Raton and Las Olas Blvd in Ft. Lauderdale.. Strolling the shops and art galleries in those places makes for a nice evening or afternoon – especially with a coffee from Starbucks in hand.
I really enjoy catching as show at Arts Garage in Delray or a musical at Broward Center.
Some of my favorite places to eat are Ninos of Boca for Italian, Lemon Grass for Asian and Ruth’s Chris for an amazing rib eye.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my Shoutout to the memory my Grandparents for encouraging me from a child to pursue my passion for music and to the memory of my Dad whose favorite word was “perseverance” – he taught me to never be afraid to dare to dream.
