We had the good fortune of connecting with Andrea Estefania Rubio and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Andrea Estefania, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Ever since I was a little girl I always loved creating. It’s been a passion of mine for years and the more I traveled the world, the more that passion became alive. As a single parent, also my choices were extremely limited so I decided to come up with an idea that I could do from my home while still be there for my son. It all started as a hobby during the pandemic and then, as time progressed, I began to sell online and to people that saw my designs. It’s been 3 years now and every year is a different stage for my brand. I am happy to contribute to the slow fashion industry and help our beautiful planet Earth by creating timeless and unique pieces with macrame.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is working with macrame; which comes from cotton. It consists of making knots and patterns in a silhouette. It has become more and more popular in the past decade due to its unique looks and the versatility to create different pieces. I believe that every macrame artists has its special touches, and from what I’ve been told, my brand represent elegance, femininity and the sensuality of the woman. Which is definitely what I am going for. I always try my best to make my customers feel like true goddesses once they try my pieces. It brings me so much joy to see their faces. It’s never easy to “make it” as an artist. Not everybody appreciates the work or the story handmade pieces, but there are also customers that do and this is what makes us grow and believe in our art. I always try to stay positive and acknowledge that nothing will come easy, but like I always say “it’s not the destination, it’s the journey”. This always makes me feel better.
Lessons I’ve learned during my process is that you need a lot of patience to work with macrame. Patience is the number one requirement for my work. Without patience it’s very difficult to succeed or keep going. Another lesson I’ve learned is to take constructive criticism in a good way! People will always tell you other ways to make things because there are millions of different ways to make the same top or skirt, but you just have to follow your heart and do what you think it’s good.
I would like the world to know about my brand that I am not only a female macrame artist, but also a Mother who cares about the future of our Planet Earth and that every piece that I make with my own hands is made with so much love. I believe that every little grain of salt helps and the less we buy from fast fashion industry, the longer we and our kids will live.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
During the day I would take them to South pointe park for a bike ride around the beautiful beach, then we would stop by Pura Vida and grab a juice or smoothie. Then we would stop by the One hotel beach club for a dance in the sand. At night we would go have dinner at Call me Gabby, also in south pointe then probably go to a hidden speakeasy on collins ave. I into arts and fashion so we will also go to design district and look around all the art in the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank all my friends that have always believed in me since the beginning. They know who they are and I’m forever grateful to have their support, love and encouragement.
