We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Meyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
YES! It’s “NO is a complete sentence”.
In my industry, when you are first starting out, you want to say “YES” to everything in order to build your network/brand/connections, etc.
The most difficult evolution is once you have established yourself and people begin to come at you from every corner with projects, collaborations, co-writes… learning the value in politely saying “NO’ to the ones that aren’t going to directly benefit your immediate path and that you don’t have to provide a lengthy explanation about WHY other than for right now, it’s just a NO.
This quote has helped me greatly in finding a balance between my career time and much-needed personal time with family/friends, etc.
What should our readers know about your business?
It’s been a long, hard road… I originally fell in love with music growing up in church and playing in the church band. Eventually I got my hands on a digital recording keyboard and started creating music of my own and then later bought equipment to start recording vocals and writing/recording songs. This was during the late 90’s/early 2000’s “Boy Band Craze” and a few friends and I (who had formed a “boy band”)…(that’s so cringe to say now LOL)… we submitted our songs for the first season of “Making The Band” and were all invited to fly out to LA to audition.
At the audition, we clicked with a couple other singers and while singing/practicing together in the bathroom in preparation for our audition, were overheard by label Manager Thomas Goodin and Producer Oji Pierce who immediately offered us a management/development deal and within a few weeks, we all moved to LA and were in the studio together recording our first EP with Oji and tracks from other producers like Max Martin, etc.
We toured a bit opening for artists like Jennifer Lopez and others, but like most “boy bands” at the time, eventually all went our separate ways, but during the studio process, Oji realized that I could play keys and make beats and kept me in on sessions developing me as a Writer/Producer (while also teaching me about the music business.
Fast-forward about 7 years working in LA as a music producer, I was able to take those crafts and be fortunate enough to find a good production partner (Christopher Aaron from American Idol season one) and we formed our first music production company called “The Alumni” under which we were able to write/produce several Billboard Top 20 hits and work with with Artists like: Snoop Dogg, Frankie J, Kaya Jones (Pussycat Dolls), Digital Underground, Disney Artists: Miley Cyrus, Raven Symone, Mitchel Musso, Ava Kolker, D-One, Fat Joe, Jeff Timmons (98 Degrees), Stefan Benz (American Idol 2023), and many more…
Around 2015, Chris and I went different directions musically as I had found a “knack” for writing dance music and after attending the MIDEM music conference in France a few times, had developed relationships with several of the international dance music labels (Ultra Music/Spinnin’ Records/Planet Punk/Revealed Records…), I started working heavily with them and had a few large dance hits including writing the official 2017 German music festival anthem called “On Fire”. https://youtu.be/SC2zteloma4
After that followed deluge of a thousand requests to write dance singles for other huge European Artists like Klaas (“Mr. Saxobeat” that just hit 50 Million Streams on Spotify), Freischwimmer, David Bulla, Rocco, KSHMR, Miles Arnell, Kevin Krissen, etc.
This massive participation in the international dance market (while also continuing to co-write/produce with domestic pop artists like Ava Kolker, Stefan Benz (first #1 single in South Africa), and working with other amazing talent Managers like Charlie Walk/Manny Mijares, prompted an invitation from the top-notch Distribution Company Vydia who offered me my own label deal. After solidifying that and bringing in a couple valuable partners, we are currently launching our new label (EMG) that’s geared towards creating an “Artist-Friendly” platform in which Artists can not only receive a more than fair share of master royalties, but also network with other Artists/Songwriters/Producers, etc. around the globe.
My “story” (and biggest takeaway) from all of that is: ALWAYS network…ALWAYS show up when invited…ALWAYS be true to what you believe and know what you’re good at, and NEVER stop grinding or be afraid to EVOLVE personally and in your craft. We are ALL “Works In Progress”… (You just have to be willing to beat down the doors and push through the “red tape” 😉
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d invite them RIGHT here to my home… I’ve recently purchased a new house that I renovated from the ground up to include an awesome Air BnB, pool, several hangout areas geared toward writing music and also my dream studio equipped with all the latest gear and acoustics (as well as fun stuff like a Jellyfish Tank, etc.)
I host some amazing writing camps here and people fly in to work here from coast to coast (as well as internationallly).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest thanks and appreciation would have to go to the belated, amazing, #1 Hit Producer Oji Pierce of Monte Jordan’s “This is How We Do It” and Coolio’s “Gangster’s Paradise (and many others) for seeing talent in me at a young age and taking me under his wing and into his studio to teach me not only how to write songs…produce catchy tracks, but also how important it is to learn how to be a sharp Businessman with managing your time, money, relationships and all the other hurdles that come along with working in the music industry. RIP my guy!
