Meet Malaika Lepine | ONErpm Caribbean Business Manager

We had the good fortune of connecting with Malaika Lepine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malaika, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I was born in Canada to a Canadian father (white) and African mother (black), and raised internationally. I grew up between Canada, Africa and Europe to land in NYC and now am in Jamaica 🙂 I mention my parents ethnicity because it played a huge role in my formative year of relating to 2 worlds.
Growing up the way I did, having to make new friends, and go to new school every 2 years, my one constant was music. No matter where I was, music was my companion, my first love, my best friend, my confident, music was the soundtrack to my life.
It was serendipity that the music business would be my life
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Let me start by saying that if you do not LOVE music, you won’t and can’t make it in music. I am speaking of all the facets of the industry, from being an artist to producer, publicist to music exec and all in between, the music business if not for the faint of heart.
I started at the bottom, now I’m here 🙂 I did it all ! From doing the traffic report on the radio while my kids were in the studio doing their homework, to standing in the sun for hours at various music festivals interviewing artists. I ran a successful entertainment blog, was a publicist for many years and am now a music executive at ONErpm. In my 20+ years in music, there has been many ups and down, but there are some moments that stand out and made it all worth while such as Morgan Heritage winning their first Grammy, as the publicist on that historical journey, it was one of the proudest moment of my career. Thereafter I have been blessed to be on the Grammy journey of other projects as a publicist, and most recently as the project manager for Sean Paul “Live n Livin” Grammy nominated album, and Kakaba Pyramid Grammy winning “The Kalling” album.
I am admittedly a workaholic, to a fault, it is so hard for me to unplug and disconnect. Music has become a part of my DNA, and my role at ONErpm breathed new life in my career. and renewed my passion I am perhaps the happiest that I have been in my profession. It is hard work, I don’t have a 9 to 5, I have a 24/7. But it is a labour of love, and I found my home with this company.
So let me introduce myself again, I am the proud ONErpm Caribbean Business Manager. Whether clients are established or upcoming artists/producers/labels, I personally try to make myself available for a conversation, quick chat or email exchange to provide clarity, direction, or just listen to their vision and provide insights.
