We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashley, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I think my interest in an artistic career appeals to me because it lets me offload all my volatile energy that I’m itching to get out. Career might not be the best word as I’m not really concerned with making a living off of it, but regardless of where I’m at in life I will always have some abominable mish-mash to pour myself out into.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My main love is making music! I have a huge affinity for noisy, fast, and manic sounding stuff that’s impossible to dance to! Right now I’m mainly obsessed and involved in the online breakcore / gabber revival thing that’s going on and coming from my previous and still ongoing obsession with hardcore punk / powerviolence, I want to smash both of those genres up together into something super fast and aggressive that I think electronic music has still yet to tap into fully! I’m still very early in my “career”, having mostly only played URL shows from my bedroom and put out a few songs that I feel reflect what I want to do in the future, but I’ve slowly been getting more opportunities to play live and I hope to bridge that gap from instrument-prominent to electronic hardcore!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I honestly have no idea! I could see myself having fun with any of my friends pretty much anywhere! I really just enjoy doing really mundane stuff with the right people! I’d be down to do grocery shopping for the week and maybe decide to try and cook or bake something new! Or maybe go to somewhere pretty like a park or Vizcaya or something, somewhere with alot of lizards or birds I can look at! I guess that stuff’s all for me though! Depends mostly on what they like or have in mind as well! I would for sure take them to see a hardcore show though, those are always so much fun!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely my friend Samantha and her brand, Omegaspit!! She is one of the most ambitious and charismatic people I know! All my friends and my boyfriend, Marlon, kick ass and I’m super grateful to have them!
