We had the good fortune of connecting with Austin Courtney and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Austin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I think that nowadays people do not prioritize the importance of having meaning within their lives & career. Yes money is great, and it is a good indicator of success in the traditional sense. However, there is an intangible that money cannot buy, which is fulfillment. Being fulfilled and feeling like you are making an impression on people is a wonderful feeling. When I create videos and am able to put the ideas in my head into a real life project, I feel amazing – no matter how many people actually end up seeing it. The love for creation is something that I had my entire life, but I did not know how to express it. It was until I finally dropped my own skepticism and started to produce creative videos for the internet to see that I felt my internal expression come to life. Simply put – a creative career is one of the most fulfilling career’s you could ask for.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My professional career has truly just began, as I am freshly graduated from college. I have been making money in a non-traditional sense through UGC and advertisements for businesses. I would say that my non-traditional path in life has helped me more than anything, because a huge part of being a creator is meeting people and networking. I also have an optimistic attitude and have never been the one to self-loathe or doubt myself. These are just some things that makes me keep going forward in my life and career. The thing that has helped me the most professionally is simply just taking risks and putting my energy into the world. I have never thought twice about messaging someone, e-mailing someone, or applying somewhere. I am a firm believer that it is better to know exactly what happened, than what could have happened. To me that is the worst feeling you can experience, that feeling truly will hurt you worse than any amount of embarrassment or failure. Another important piece of advice, is that when you don’t feel like you are moving forward in your career and life, simply just start improving. This does not mean work harder, but to be smarter. Read a book on how to dominate in your field, watch a YouTube video on a skill you have not learned. This is something that I have implemented for quite some time now and it has successfully kept me going.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first thing that I would do, is throw on some beach clothes and head on over to South Beach. I know this sounds cliché but I truly love sun-bathing on South Beach, especially in the off season. My favorite thing about Miami is how close the fun places are to the strip. Lincoln Road is the next place we would go to, this is a phenomenal shopping strip and I always have so much fun walking up and down it for a few hours. I am a basketball addict and it would be a crime to not go grab some Heat tickets and watch Jimmy Butler ball-out at least once on this trip. At least one day I would want my friend to fully absorb the Art District of Miami. There are a lot of beautiful spots to hit and great places to get pictures. After we have done a bit of everything I would take my friend out to a night-club. If we were already in the Art District I would probably take him over to the Clevender, but he better be prepared to spend money. If he wanted to keep the trip a little more budget friendly, then we would head on over to Fort Lauderdale and have some fun at America’s Backyard!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have had an amazing supporting cast around me for some time now. My family, my friends, and my girlfriend are phenomenal people and I am simply blessed to have such conducive people in my life. My family has been my NorthStar in showing me where I should go and what jobs would support my interests the most. They have pushed me to go create my passion into a full blown career. My friends have provided me with some of the best ideas in which I have worked on, and they gave me the advice that I needed to hear. Lastly, my girlfriend has given me some extremely helpful tips and I am fortunate that me and her share the same passions and interests in life. She travels with me, meets people with me, and teaches me some great things that keeps me going harder.
