We had the good fortune of connecting with Barby Bruening and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Barby, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always knew I wanted to be a stay at home mom and photography seemed to be something that allowed me to do that. I started by doing a few clients every couple months never expecting my small business to take off like it did.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I love making people feel “pretty” it brings me so much joy! I come to every session with big happy energy. My style of photography is very relaxed and fun. I make sure my clients leave the session with a fun experience rather than just a Photoshoot.
It wasn’t easy getting to where I am today. I’m sure most creatives will tell you this.
My biggest set back was that my biggest booked year (3 weddings and 10 family sessions) were ALL canceled due to COVID in 2020. I was pregnant and I didn’t want to risk it.
I had to do tons of freebies to build my portfolio. But so far
2022 has been my most successful year and I am very grateful.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Sujheil from Its always picnic time was the first company to refer me clients and still to this day. I love working with her, she is also a mom and is super talented on what she does.
My husband Brad, he went to film school and has been coaching me since the start.
My sister in law Gloria, from Gloria Ruth Photography. she has taken me on to many sessions and weddings and I’m always learning from her. She is literally the best photographer I know!
