We had the good fortune of connecting with Ben Moss and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ben, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think of work-life balance as lifestyle. For instance, as a Realtor, I haven’t had a true “day off” other than a couple holidays a year, in years. My life and all of its various components are my lifestyle. I have worked hard and consciously to live a lifestyle that I want to live and truly enjoy. I try to maintain a few key areas in my life in a balance that works for me, all with a base of mindfulness and awareness. Working my life around the key pillars of importance helps me not to go too far in any one direction wherein I sacrifice my balance and happiness and become burned out. Hence, it is a sustainable and enjoyable way to live life – my lifestyle. The key pillars are what I make a disciplined effort to focus on every day. I don’t always achieve the objective, but that is when I focus on not resisting what is. Some days are going to be a little out of balance and that’s ok. It’s the consistency that I am trying to achieve. It has taken me a lot of effort to learn about letting go of that resistance when I don’t hit my pillars or my ideals. With a really busy career and young kids, life is hectic. The underpinning of gratitude and “enjoying the ride” mentality really help me to keep things in perspective – keeping my ego in check when it’s flowing and keeping anxiety in check when it pokes at me.
What should our readers know about your business?
There are a few things that have helped me achieve any success in my career. I would identify them as 1) loving what I do, 2) connecting with people authentically, 3) consistency and discipline and 4) always trying to be of service, and doing so with grace. Carving out a niche is also important. I’ve become known for my work and focus within the sports and entertainment world of Residential real estate brokerage.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Some of the things I would show off in Miami would include a jog over the Rickenbacker Bridge early in the morning as the sun is rising, a casual dinner with live music sitting outside at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club, a visit to the brewpubs in Wynwood, a beach day south of Fifth, a drive down to the Keys for lunch at Lor-e-Lei. Of course, we would throw in a brunch at Threefold Cafe, Lunch/dinner at some of my other favorite spots like Bulla in Coral Gables, Ghee amd a few other spots would be a must also.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In addition to my amazing family and friends, books and podcasts have also been my mentors. I learn every day from some of the smartest people on the planet and I’m so thankful to love in an age in which it’s all at my fingertips. A couple of the most influential books for me have been Think and Grow Rich and The One Thing,
