We had the good fortune of connecting with Beverly Biser-Austin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Beverly, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I was listening to NPR’s Shankar Vedantam on his program “Hidden Brain” regarding a study about risk and success. If a person has a Plan A and another has a Plan A and B, the person with just a Plan A will have a higher rate of meeting his goals. Psychologically, the person with only Plan A knows there is nothing else. They have to succeed! I started my art studio 4 years ago with just that in mind. Studiobev has no plan B. It has to succeed! It is a second career for me. Though art has always been a part of my life, I was a Dental Hygienist for 40 years. I used my hands every day and sold Dentistry for my Dentist. I always thought I could have a business of my own. I struggled with what type of business that might be. It was my wife that encouraged me to pursue art. I was using art to help control my pain from an injury. And after retirement, the art business felt right. In fact, I enjoy the business part of my studio as much as the art. I research each form of art on the computer first, perfect the technique and then how to reach potential customers. I remind myself everyday there is only Plan A, Studiobev has to succeed!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art includes techniques in spinart; feng shui; and different epoxy applications. You have probably have seen the spin art on many Instagram posts. I first saw it 3 years ago and loved it! I had a machine built and love the freedom that it give you as an artist to just let go. The feng shui art as my wife penned, is just me and the canvas using trowels to push the paint in a direction and collide colors. Some colors stay while others combine to make beautiful interactions.
I took a woodworking class at a community college to learn how to make my own frames and was interduced to epoxy. It is technique sensitive but I love it almost as much as painting. The colors are hard to control but that is what makes it fun and challenging!
You can see most of my work on Instagram under studio1bev and the same on Facebook.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In this area I would take them to the beach, the mountains and balance a good home cooked meal with my favorite restaurants Sakura’s and Backstreets, not to forget the local pub The Tap Room! Grandfather Mountain is great and we recently visited Chimney Rock near Lake Lure. It is beautiful! And of course, you couldn’t forget The River’s Art District near Asheville.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife, Christle Teague is the person that pushed me out into the Art world, first purchasing me art lessons and encouraging me everyday to create. She has her own business, Christleclean Cleaning Service that has grown from 3 clients to over 100 and employing 10 people. Its a hard and successful business and I am lucky to observe her business model everyday! Also, I would be negligent not to include my children who run successful businesses also! They encourage me every day! My daughter and son-in-law run their own theatrical company, Sigmon Theatrical. The hardest working theatre people I know. They never rest!
And my son works in the furniture industry in the online sales and encourages me with every art piece I have done!
We all have a entrepreneurial spirit and all of us could deserve a Shoutout!
My whole family supports me! My parents, sisters and extended! My step-father is actually an artist also! I think they are all proud of me!
