We had the good fortune of connecting with Black Los and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Black Los, we’d love to hear what makes you happy.
My children. I have a 16 year old daughter and a soon-to-be 14 year old son. Being around my children is like being around myself. We all have like interests and personalities. They’re extremely intelligent, talented, and hilarious in their own respective ways. I see different parts of personalty in them both.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’d consider myself an artist for the sake and love of the art, itself. I love Hip Hop. It shaped and molded my view and interaction with the world. It’s what fueled my creativity, growing up as a fairly quiet, shy, neurodivergent that felt he wasn’t really good at a lot of things, or at least things that would be “cool”, but it all started with poetry, which transitioned into writing bars.

The first time I ever wrote my first rhymes was when I was 7 years old, and it was a local citywide contest called “Turn In The Guns”, where kids would draw pictures or write slogans against inner city gun violence. I was the only one who wrote a rap, and my teacher asked me to share with the class. I still don’t know what gave me the nerve, because I didn’t talk too much to most of the students, let alone rap in front of class, lol. After I spit my little rhymes (that I still remember to this very day, lol), it was the first time I ever felt “cool”, or accepted, even it is was for that moment.

I never really recorded or even wrote bars regularly until around 16, but I wrote poetry almost every day since age 12, even had a couple published. I started recording music right around my 20th birthday.

I never had aspirations to be rich and famous, all the glitz and glamour. I just wanted to make music that I liked, that some of my peers, whom I admire and respect, would rock with it, too. Anything beyond that would just be a plus.

Creating should never be focused on just making a product, because you’re just looking for a bottom line, and artistic integrity doesn’t even have to be a factor. Everyone is just doing their version of what the hot artist is doing. Legends don’t become legends by not going against the norm. Run into unchartered territory. Don’t be afraid to create for the sake of art itself.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, my best friend is from the area, lol, but say someone out of town, hmmm…

All the touristy places aren’t my thing, but i’d take you to some local spot that got national attention, like Chaps Pit Beef, over on Pulaski Highway, over East, my side of town. Go to Lexington Market, in Downtown Baltimore. Since we’d be downtown already, chill by the Inner Harbor, take some flicks, maybe board The USS Constellation, go to the Baltimore National Aquarium. Some open mics. Might kick it with The Collective at one of our media studios for a session or just a kickback. I’m boring, really. If i’m not working or creating, i’m chillin.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, ALL PRAISES due to The Most High.

I’m grateful for my children. My two reasons.

Shoutout to KNOC List, D’Yago & BackDraft for embracing me and starting my recording career.

Shoutout to Lyriqs for showing me the business and that the world could hear me.

Shoutout to The Collective. (Jeremy Raphael, The REAL Cool Green, Dan Mega, Bari Lutalo, Kellye Lo, Ronnie, Dave.)

Special shoutout to Tim Chester, a Visionary. A Talented, Kind Human Being.

To the memories of my parents.

I thank my City of Baltimore for everything that I’m not, and everything it made me.
