We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandon Hurst and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I grew up in the 90’s where my house there was always music playing and or a music video was playing on my tv. These factors played a huge part in me being creative. My first love was/ still is music, my mother is to thank for that she introduced me to music and singing at a young age. I always felt like I was creative, use to love to color, coloring books where my favorite then I got introduced to legos, and that’s where my imagination flourished, building things and acting out scenarios. But my creative journey really started after high school where I didn’t know what I wanted to do so I was given an old dell laptop, this was in the late 2000’s and I thought I was going to be a songwriter so I was religiously downloading beats and carrying around a notebook. then that phase passed then I just started playing around with MS publisher and created flyers using that. Then I realized I was good at it so I convinced my mother to sign up for art school reluctantly she did but she seen how passionate I was and here I am today creating, and looking to expand on my creative skills. Being a creative was the only job I seen for myself, because I feel its not necessarily work it’s fun.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart, is my ability to go against the grain, and adapt. Me taking risk and thinking outside of the box has been a way that set me apart as well. How I got to where I am professionally is my drive and determination to succeed, and be successful. The No’s that I recieved fueled me to continue, even though the no’s hurt and the rejection hurt also but it made me want to keep going. Being rejected for something you know you were born to do isn’t easy its like falling down scraping your knee and your mom putting alcohol on it, the sting only last for a moment but once that moment pass, you get back up and try again. I overcame/ still overcoming challenges by putting the focus back on myself, we have to take care of us mentally, physically and emotionally. So overcoming my challenges consist of Meditation, hitting the gym and just keeping myself motivated creatively. I learned never give up, giving up means you let it get the best of you and you let your drive, fire and passion die before you could even reach the end goal. I want people to know, my faith, my drive and my optimism, keeps me creating. knowing i’m destined to be this bomb ass creative is what keeps me going even after being rejected for roles I know i’m qualified for but my optimistic nature and learning from other black and brown creatives is what keeps me motivated. You will see my work and my name on some major projects that’s how determine and passionate I am.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First, we would grab brunch at this place called batch, then after that, we would head to Wynwood, take some photos, shop locally and see some art then have a drink at Kush or Miami Mojito Company. then Enjoy a little beach action and sun. After head back to the Air BNB refresh, and hit the night scene catch a vibe starting in Brickell, then bar hop a little then we finish the night in south beach or head back to Fort Lauderdale, The wharf, Capones, or Easton Fort Lauderdale. Each day would be something different and we’ll just explore a different city, like Jensen beach, Naples, Key West, and West palm beach.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I give a shout out to all the underdogs that’s been overlooked, undervalued and passedover, because of something they lacked that made them not qualified for a role, organization, or group of people.
