We had the good fortune of connecting with Bri’awn Patrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bri’awn, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted the freedom of controlling my own schedule. I wanted to enjoy the pleasure of waking up everyday and being in love with my job and what I do.
I seen through others what life looks like when they were not happy with their career choices and I wanted to make that change in my life.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My story is a bit interesting. I started my business at the age of 26 after resigning from my last 9-to-5 job working as a medical assistant/medical scribe at a prominent medical office in Washington DC. When I quit my job, I had no idea what I would do next, but I knew my next move had to be my best move. I was young yet old enough to know what I wanted in life and I knew that I had to be happy in my career in order to achieve those things. I began researching different fields that I was interested in, and my heart lead me to the world of aesthetics. This is interesting, because I have always had some hand in the beauty industry, I just didn’t know what my niche was until then.
Fast forward time. My business, which started in 2017, is doing amazing. I relocated from Washington DC to Miami Florida in 2019. I open my own studio salon in May 2020. I was so proud of myself for achieving the goal of opening my own salon, even during a pandemic.
I then begin to think of my life long-term goals. I still in search of finding a niche that could work for me long-term. I knew I loved aesthetics and thoroughly enjoyed the beauty industry, but I knew I had to start planning for retirement as well. This is when I found my love for real estate. I seen myself creating generational wealth and establishing investments that would be beneficial in my near future. From this moment on I have vowed to use both of my careers hand-in-hand to help me excel to my next levels in life.
Being as though I am still on this journey, it is not easy. One of the things that always sticks in my head is when my dad told me “if it was easy, everyone would be doing it“, this is just my reminder to keep pushing even when the road gets tough, don’t give up I still have fight left in me and I still have goals to achieve.
The biggest lesson I have learned along the way is that believing is everything. I believe I could get here that is why I am here. It has been times in my life where I have wanted to achieve things, but I never truly believed that I could have them or I doubted the fact that I could have them therefore I never received it. After reading the book, the secret, I realized that my mentality is what was keeping me from achieving the things that I really wanted in life. I had to take a step back reevaluate my mindset, put things into perspective, and take that leap of faith.
You might not always know what the end results will be but as long as you put forth your best effort, you can only expect the best results. I want people to know that the only limitations you make in life are the limits that you put on yourself. My story is constantly evolving and even now people always ask me, Are you still going to keep your beauty business and practice real estate at the same time? The answer is yes, absolutely! I thoroughly enjoy both of my careers, and I feel as though God has put it in place for me to obtain both of them at the same time and excel at the same time. If it was not meant for me, I would have never been able to achieve these things. It will take time management, organization, and even hiring a team, but I am committed and ready to see what is in store for me next.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Miami, Florida is such a hotspot full of exciting things to do. Whether we are trying new restaurants on south beach or in brickell, bar hopping or site seeing in wynwood, shopping in design district or bal harbour, going to lounges or clubs in Midtown or South Beach there is never a dull moment. We can lay out by the rooftop pool or hit the sand and lay out by the beach. We can also do fun things like renting a yacht for a few hours to be on the water or just simply spending time cherishing each other. There is so much culture here and so many different ventures to indulge in. I can always find things that we can enjoy to do based on what your mood or what your preference is for your visit.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout-out my parents for being moral support through my decisions, Lisa (my friend and mentor) showed me the world of real estate before I even knew I was interested and what female entrepreneurship looks like, the book called “the secret” and “the magic” changed my life through my thought process, and all my family and friends who have supported me or gave me encouragement along the way. Your efforts to build me up when I was down never went unnoticed!
