We had the good fortune of connecting with Calvin Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Calvin, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
If it’s really true that we are what we routinely do then I have tried to make discipline, consistency, and hard work a part of my daily regimen. I have learned to fall in love with the process as the reward is always in the work.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I serve as an evening news, anchor for WPLG-TV, Local 10 News. In my 17th year in South Florida as a journalist, I have had the privilege of covering many stories. I also worked in several TV markets prior to South Florida, including Philadelphia, Dallas, and Atlanta to name a few. There have been numerous lessons along the way as well as challenges to overcome. None killed me, so there is a lot left to do and accomplish. From the challenges, the lessons include believing in yourself, planning and never giving up on your hopes and dreams.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is so much to see and do in South Florida from the stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, diversity of restaurants to touring the Everglades. The adventure depends on the visitors’ palate, their appetite to explore. The options are limitless, and if the add the Keys to the menu then the journey gets to be relaxing and overwhelming at the same time. I love to plan so hosting is truly a labor of love!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a shout out to two groups that I currently serve in a leadership role, the charity, Angels for Humanity, and the National Association of Black Journalists – South Florida chapter. I would like to recognize my two boys and my girl, Solomon, Roman, and Sakala, as I am always a father first.
