We had the good fortune of connecting with CapiShe Productions and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi CapiShe, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Shelley is an actor and went to New York to pursue acting, but the opportunities for black actresses were far and few in between, especially at the level she was at. Tanya has always been a creative person, from drawing and creating different fonts to different fonts and writing poetry growing up, so as an adult she was looking for a creative outlet. At the time, web series on YouTube were a thing, and so we decided to create opportunities for other people like us. We started off writing a web series for ourselves, so that Shelley could beef up her acting reel and the love for filmmaking began. Humble begins.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We love telling real stories that center around black people to show that they too share in the overall human experience. We are most excited about our most recent project, Single, Taken, Other, which is about a group of friend navigating their love lives. But getting here was not easy or quick. When we started our business is 2018, we literally had to teach ourselves everything, film making, production, how to write scripts, edit, etc. What helped us was getting around other filmmakers, reading a lot of books and immersing ourselves in film culture. Once we decided to pursue this field, we were serious and consistent about it. We started writing scripts and having trusted friends read over them or sending them in for script coverage. We asked other filmmakers to help with production, so that we could learn and then made a few of our own short films. And that all led us to where we are now. We definitely had some setbacks. The first web series we wrote and produced never made it to post production and we have worked with filmmakers who didn’t value our voice. But our motto is No L’s for Losses, Just L’s for Lessons. And we thank God for the teachable moments. We want our brand to represent real stories about real people.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Wynwood for the art The beaches, cuz duh, we’re Jamaican. the water is always going to be a thing for us. Pompano Beach and Hollywood Beach for the Boardwalk
We recently discovered the Lyric Theater, in Overtown and the Old Dillard Museum, which holds a lot of history for the area.
Culturally we’re getting Jamaican food like Taste Rite, Aunt I’s. Dunkanoo is a nice vibe.
Tacos by the beach is a must!!
No itinerary, just vibes.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to Winsome & Hershell Miller, our Jamaican parents, because of them we are the resourceful, creative women we are today.
