Meet Caro Velez | Makeup Artist and Facial Specialist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Caro Velez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caro, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I think that the key habits for success have been consistency and discipline. You must dedicate the necessary time to your business, have a clear idea of where you want to go and work for it. Organization is equally important for success, planning your day to day so that each step you take leads you to achieve your goal. We are artists., but that doesn’t mean you can’t be without a plan, which is what allows you to build a stable project.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well, I’ll tell you my story. Initially, this started as a hobby. I’m a dentist graduated in Colombia, my country of origin, and there I worked as a dentist, but makeup was a passion for me. I was literally crazy about makeup. So I started studying this and taking self-makeup courses. Over time, I ended up doing makeup for my friends.
When I moved to the United States because I got married, during the time of transition, I had a lot of free time, so I had more time for what was my passion. One day, I decided to take a professional course as my personal goal, and in one of my courses an instructor offered me the possibility of working with her. And that’s how I started, I was her assistant, and step by step, I grew my career. I took courses with several well-known artists in this industry and I began to create my own professional profile, to grow my portfolio of services and work, and my clients kept coming in more and more every day thanks to the quality of the work that I deliver day after day.
Was it easy?
It hasn’t been easy but it hasn’t been impossible either. Today there are still people who ask me if this is the only thing I do. I think they see it as something recreational and not as a job.
If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
Discipline has been the key, studying, training, persisting and with the necessary dedication that a job requires.
Makeup is more than just putting on foundation, it’s an art, your canvas is a face and like any art you have to study and prepare yourself every day and even more in this industry that changes all the time.
What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way.
Consistency leads you to achieve the goals you set for yourself and that any talent you develop in life will get you ahead in any circumstance.
What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I suggest everyone to dedicate time to their talents, not just to study in books, learn an art, play a musical instrument, dance, because those are things that can be useful in life, what for me started as a hobby, as something in my free time, today it became my career and my job, a tool for life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would start with a traditional coffee at the Versailles,Of course I would take her to see the art of Wynwood walls and in that area there are many interesting gastronomic places, then a stroll through Bayside to end the day with dinner at Julia & Henry’s.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother and my husband have been a fundamental part of this process. They have always been there to support me in achieving my goals. They have trusted in my abilities and have encouraged me to have a successful career in the beauty industry. And of course, to my clients for their continued trust and support. Every time they recommend my work it means the world to me and motivates me to keep delivering my best.
