We had the good fortune of connecting with Carol Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carol, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in Newport, RI and have lived in Old Town Alexandra, Pawleys Island, SC and currently reside in Delray Beach, FL. Each of these places was on a body of water, which is where I am happiest. I took lessons at the Torpedo Factory in Old Town, using watercolor and worked into acrylics. I have been painting steadily for over 12 years and continue to take classes regularly.
I come from a very artistic and musical family. My Aunt was a revered watercolorist in Durham, NC and my brother holds the same title in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He teaches watercolor at the Providence Arts Society. My sister, mother and father were all pianists, guitarists and violinists, and my mother sang with the Boston Pops.
All my art is original and diverse. My previous instructor tells me I am a realist painter, but I like to do somethings whimsical paintings also. I am taking abstract art classes at the Armory in West Palm Beach currently.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I worked for the Federal Government in Newport, R.I. and later in Washington, DC. I started my career as a technical programmer which led me into preparing the first PCs in the Federal Government; learning it’s programming and lastly teaching users in the DoD, IRS and Federal Election Commission, how to run their programs. I became a Microsoft Certified instructor and when I retired I had my own tutoring business in Delray Beach, FL.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Delray Beach, The Avenue, restaurants and shops. Delray Beach Club of which I am a member. Possibly the Morikai Museum and Japanese Gardens. I would also take them on the Water “Taxi from Ft. Lauderedale south. It’s a great tour of homes and people that live in them. Lastly we would do Palm Beach shopping, dinners and entertainment.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Brother Bill. His work and talent and critiques have helped me get to the stage of art I am in now. I am much more comfortable showing my art than I was a few years ago. Also, all my fellow artist aquaintences at Zero Empty Spaces Studios in Boca Raton are an everyday inspiration to me.
