We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolina Omedas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carolina, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?

At Macondo, we feel deeply connected to our community. We actively participate, building relationships based on joy, friendship, and enthusiastic interactions with our customers. We organize various events and activities that promote enjoyment and interaction, such as storytelling for children, book exchanges, reading clubs, music events, origami, kokedamas, book presentations, among others. We aim to convey the message that every day is a celebration, and we greet our customers, our guests, with enthusiasm and joy. We currently recognize the importance of maintaining eye contact and fostering transparent and sincere communication.

At Macondo, we consciusly cultivate “peripheral relationships” or “weak ties.” We believe these connections, although less intimate than familial or friendly ones, are crucial for uplifting the spirit and revitalizing energies. A sense of belonging is fundamental for establishing meaningful connections with others. We seek to evoke the ambiance of yesteryear’s cafes, where people gathered to enjoy coffee, read the newspaper, or discuss the day’s events.

We strive to know our customers individually, remembering their preferences, from how they like their coffee to their favorite breakfast. We want every person who visits us to feel they are part of something special and unique, reminiscent of the traditional cafes where authentic and enduring relationships were formed.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are Macondo Kendall, the first franchisees of this brand and we offer a very high quality coffee from Colombia, called specialty coffee, now widely recognized worldwide. I am happy to belong to this brand and the restaurant industry. For more than 25 years I worked as a journalist in different radio programs in my country and then as a partner in an elearning venture in 2002 when it was a totally unknown activity and then as an assistant in the family business founded by my parents. I never imagined that I would own a restaurant, when I met Macondo I fell in love with the brand, the very high quality of the coffee and its processes, its menu and above all the cultural offer that it could offer to our customers, all of this was accompanied by the connection and dealing with clients that I love. My first strategy was that I had to buy a job because at my age in a new country no one would give me a job. And so it was, the work became entrepreneurship and then a company. I really like serving and caring for clients, ensuring that people have a good experience and leave happy. I have always liked to host parties at my house and serve our guests with affection.
It was not easy to start in a country with different codes and challenges, in a new industry. With my husband, who is also my partner, we have taken this path together. I have taken at least 15 different courses related to this industry, read books, I subscribe to different specialized publications and I read them, we also seek advice from experts who have given us a lot of confidence in each decision. In this business you have to make decisions constantly and I have developed my own methodology to have quick and accurate responses.
At a deeper level; As a woman, I look for inspiration in other women that I admire and I see myself in the mirror of them, it incorporates the traits that I like in each one, and I interact in a conversation of learning, of courage, of daring, these are some of the traits of the entrepreneurial woman.
I believe that perseverance and consistency in the company starts with wanting, with passion. I like being in Macondo and I enjoy it, but when the routines and mechanization overwhelm me I stop; I reconnect and oxygenate that desire to continue to return strongly to the routine activities that companies demand. Maintaining love and passion is essential.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show him the time of his life. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary: let’s say it was a week-long trip, where you would eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc. In your opinion, what are some of the most fun, interesting and exciting people, places or things to visit? ?

We will definitely go to Shark Valley; It is on the Miccosukee reservation southwest of Miami. We will enjoy the whole way until we reach Shark Valley updating ourselves and I will add a touch of adventure to the trip by telling the truth, that we will encounter alligators on our journey, we will pass by them with our bicycles and we will do the complete 17 mile route, but that Don’t worry, I still haven’t heard of any news of attacks by these animals. We will see crocodile nests and their babies, and also beautiful birds with long necks and white plumage. Every time I go it is an adventure, the landscape changes quickly and sometimes it is beautifully flowered, other times with high water levels and thus, very changing. I really liked knowing from a video that there is for visitors at the entrance of the park, how the springs in the state of Florida have been regenerated by a recovery policy that has produced results due to perseverance. It makes me happy and comforts to know that even the most unusual and difficult cases can have a solution. I love nature and hiking trails and sharing this hobby with friends and family is wonderful.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This career has been long and fun, and I have a lot to be grateful for and acknowledge. The academic training I have received and the knowledge acquired in each of my previous professional roles have been very beneficial. I honor my husband and my children who have been my support and inspiration.
I celebrate my friends, with them security and aptitude in life is a charming ride
I appreciate the support of my family, my parents, brothers and nephews and their unconditional loving and financial support has been fundamental at every moment.
And above all, I am grateful for the invaluable legacy of my father, Dr. Omedas, who gave me the opportunity to work at his side and understand the responsibility of an entrepreneur, know work ethics, cultivate good relationships with colleagues, suppliers and clients. . He taught me not to be afraid of big numbers, to take financial risks and fully trust in my abilities. Above all, in the face of adversity and the darkest moments, I learned to trust that with work and ethics things will turn out well and there will come a time when the clouds will clear.
