We had the good fortune of connecting with Casey Everett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Casey, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Striking a balance between work life and personal life remains one of my greatest challenges as a business owner, mom, friend, wife, loved one, and human being. I have learned that there is an ebb and flow to this endeavor of achieving the right balance, just as there is in life and in work. There are times when work requires more attention and times when life does and the goal is to avoid them both needing extra attention at the same time! Learning to say no has saved my mental and physical health time and time again though it did take extreme burnout for me to surrender to that philosophy.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Making art and responding to the world in a creative way is at the core of what I do today and what I’ve done my entire life. Growing up on a Maine dairy farm in the 1980s, I learned how to be resourceful, gritty, deeply appreciative of the natural world, and responsive to my own curiousity. I learned how to make things with my hands using the limited resources available to me. Throughout my 15 year career as an art teacher in the Maine public schools, I sought to bring that spririt of resourcefulness and creativity to my students. When dreaming up Hearth and Harrow, I was 9 months pregnant with my second son and living on an organic farm managed by my husband. Perhaps it was that “full circle” moment in life that inspired me to express my fascination with nature and create something to put out into the world. So, I began drawing the natural world on the farm and in the fields and woods, taught myself how to screen print, and created the nature-inspired textiles that are the foundation of Hearth and Harrow.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
As a quirky, sensitive, artistic child, my parents gave me the space to be myself.
My choices were never questioned, my eccentricities were celebrated, and my ideas were respected. My mom and dad made me feel understood and gave me the courage to follow my own path. I was fortunate enough to find a partner in life who offers me the same support that has carried me through as an adult. I could not do what I do or be what I am in the world today without my husband, Michael, by my side.
