We had the good fortune of connecting with Cassandra Elme and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cassandra, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
The most important impact I made as a parent is being whole. Being a woman first. Identifying who I am as a person before I can proceed as being the best mother I can be for him. I believe that If I am not whole, how can I pour into his cup. He’s the fuel to my engine that keeps me going despite the obstacles thrown my way. I want to continue to be transparent with my son, about the struggles I deal with balancing motherhood, full-time graduate student, work, and running a business. Being transparent creates a space where we can continue to foster trust. I want him to see that mommy too has to handle ups and downs, but always handled with grace. It is not easy, but I want to continue to instill in him that whatever is worth having is worth fighting for. Above else always remember to check in with yourself, know yourself.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am in the business of whitening teeth and enhancing smiles. I own a teeth whitening business by the name of Smiles by Her. I offer mobile services throughout all of South Florida. One of the most rewarding aspects of my business is having the opportunity to have my clients leave with a bigger, brighter smile than when they arrived. Here at Smiles by Her, your oral health is of upmost importance. I believe that is what sets me apart. Being able to focus on the educational aspect of each visit. Teaching individuals the importance of keeping up with dental check-ups while reiterating that the mouth is the gateway to your overall health. Which is why I decided to pursue a career in dentistry. I want the ability to learn the intricate anatomy of the mouth and the details that go into keeping it healthy so I can continue educating the masses.
Challenging was the disapproval and criticism of how my services are rendered. Offering mobile teeth whitening amid a pandemic was scary. However, the rewards outweighed the risks. It was not easy, but with proper personal protective equipment, I was able to minimize hazards in every setting. My goal will always be to handle adversity while still being able to pursue the dream of changing lives one smile at a time. Along the way the lessons I learned is that my business is mine, don’t worry about the money because it will come when the passion is there. The passion behind the scenes will reflect on how you interact with your customers and how your business is represented. There will be challenges, but I will never allow that to discourage me. I truly believe that if I do my part and put God first in all that I do, he will continue to order my steps.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friend to Skyview Miami in Bayside marketplace, which is a Ferris wheel ride. At the top you get the chance to see the city of Miami, it is best to go at night. It is so breath taking and a wonderful introduction to Miami. Then we would take a stroll through Wynwood where the night life is amazing. Getting a chance to dance, drink, and purchase street food from local vendors. Enjoying the street art and wall art while we bar hop. I’m a big fan of food trucks, so I would take my friend down to a favorite of mine, Fresh Food Fast. It is Haitian cuisine with a twist. We would also drive around the city until we find new gems.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My tribe is my life line. I believe when you have a strong support system navigating this complex world is a lot easier. Luckily for me, my tribe has done a good job supporting me throughout my life. I would not have made it this far if it weren’t for them. They support, encourage me daily to level up and always strive to be the best version of myself. I want to salute my close circle of friends, cousin for encouraging me to stay the course and to continue perfecting my craft. I will also take the time to recognize my mom for being my backbone.
