We had the good fortune of connecting with Caylin MacDonough and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caylin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
All my life I’ve always loved art and people.
So it surprises many when I say that I had no interest in being a hairstylist prior to being in hair school. I had graduated at 16, and had the ability to learn a trade and be fully equipped to have a career prior to turning 18 ( thanks mom!)
My mom thought cosmetology school would be a good move, as I loved to do makeup for myself and friends, and I had nothing else up my sleeve so I went for it.
I thought I’d be a bridal makeup artist going in but left school in love with learning how to create hair colors that blended out beautifully as they grew.
From then is when I truly fell in love and pursued my career in creativity.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a specialized hairstylist and studio suite owner.
I specialize in helping guests create hair that fits THEM. From the obvious such as skin and eye color, to daily things such as how you style your hair on a daily basis? How often would you like to go between visits?
I’m proud to have a place where my clients feel comfortable, knowing they’ll always be able to freely communicate their wants, needs, likes, and dislikes.
I’m excited for the upcoming new year, as I am always ( and I mean ALWAYS) trying to better my craft and client experience. I will be taking in person classes on precision cutting, continuing to upgrade my extension experience, and keeping up with new color trends.
I opened up my suite in October of 2020 at the age of 18 in the thick of COVID. It definitely wasn’t easy! But through lots of prayer and help from my family it’s been one of my greatest rewards.
I had only been working as a stylist for 6 or so months and all of my clientele was based 45 minutes from my new location.
Learning how to market myself and make myself worth new guests consideration took time, effort, and dedication. Once they were in my chair continuing to make them feel brand new each time became my goal.
I’ve learned that how you make people feel is the most important part. Seen, cared for, pampered and leaving confident. There’s no better feeling than being able to give that to someone.
I truly feel that the service industry has so much to give. To be part of someone’s self care, something someone invests in to uplift themselves.
Truly so thankful for all of the wonderful people who choose me to be that for them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My husband and I love to take walks around baker park, and Naples beaches are always a hit!
We usually grab an açaí bowl from the bowl and walk and talk.
We are obsessed with Kareem’s Lebanese kitchen and would probably eat there everyday if we could.
And Brooklyn dough makes phenomenal bagels!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom and my husband.and my clients. My entire life my mom was my support and guidance through life.
And once hair school was over and real life started I had to work through some trials to get to my current business.
She helped me keep myself on track, helped decorate my room over a weekend, keep my bookkeeping in order, and listens to me ramble about my days after work.
My husband is my best friend and thinks I can do anything I’d like to.
His pride and love for me help me get through any day.
And his unending support as I’ve tried to build my salon from website to remodel is so appreciated.
And my guests, nothing I’ve made would be anything without them. From the girls who’ve been with me for 3 years, to the ones who’s first appointment was last week. There are no words for the gratitude I feel to be trusted with your confidence.
