Step into the world of Charles Buko (aka ‘The Baddie Whisperer’) for an exclusive one on one with the North Miami beat-maker / screen writer who’s ethics (and pending quarter billion dollar civil suit) appear set to rock the south Floridian music scene back onto it’s proper axis.

Hi Charles Coffey, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
It’s cliché but the saying goes:
“Do what you love for a living and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Don’t get me wrong I WORK. I drive, I labor. I write, I set up stages break down stages and mobile recording set ups. But I LOVE making music, wiring films creating “content” and so on.

I also LOVE the process of collaboration or being summoned / hired by an artist to assist them and seeing the satisfaction in their face when they begin to feel the completion of the project setting in onto them and they’re so pleased with the result – not only have They “gotten what they paid” for but they’re so uniquely satisfied with the precise nuance of attention to detail in their final product result and or end game – that’s my unique sustainable advantage – I’ll never be outworked.

Someone might work AS hard but I’ll never be worked harder than-ever.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am extremely proud of my accredited contributions on Amanda’s projects. Being able to produce for her and write with her has been incredible – for her to value what I do as a friend and as an artist has been right on time because I was languishing a bit.

I am also extremely proud of the (albeit limited / still unreleased) work(s) I created with Mariah Lynn. We have two songs hopefully at least one is coming out soon – maybe on her next project (as y’all may have seen via IG Shorty’s in. “ALBUM MODE” with my guy above shout out the whole jersey brick city silk city ah ah ah her manger Tee!).

Mariah is a GEM. She can be tri state ratchet or she can be Great Gatsby GQ but I believe in her so much. I think she’s on the verge of delivering a “invasion of privacy” / “get rich or die trying” level effort for / from the tri state and I’m hopeful to be a part of that.

Mariah is so thorough so diligent it’s almost like she was built in a lab. She’s obviously a beautiful lady but her demeanor and her focus (and not to has it but her hand throwing hard to ignore) she reminds me of like a female Sylvester Stallone shes just like iconic af even though; you couldn’t meet anyone nicer, more humble and down to earth.

The two songs we worked on together (even though they haven’t come out YET) are probably the works I am most proud of in my life.

Me personally? I have a rap album done, a Gaza dancehall (battle reggae) album done, a country album done and also a retro reggae album like 1980s & 90s style reggae done too so we’ll see if any of the distributors I’m talking to take action in the first quarter of 2025.

The good ting about having all that material is if I’m ever painted into a corner with an artist for whom I am producing for or writing with – I can just pull up one of my tracks a yolk the vocals off and if I play 3-4 in a row typically the artist will find at least one they vibe with and want to work on for their project (s).

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to private party that’s my home girl FLORIDA BABY and my manager Stix’s spot in west little river it’s a super dope outdoor yard with food trucks movie screen, film nights – Jamaican food latin food everything you can post up smoke, chill eat and if it’s too warm outside they have a SICK industrial warehouse night club space inside.

After that probably shout to my guy DozzyRoss and see if he can’t carve some space for us at SAVOR WYNWOOD – positively INCREDIBLE restaurant and indoor outdoor yard lounge in Wynwood (obviously). Amazing food and incredible sonic vibes some of the best DJ’s curating afro carribean vibes.

Then my guy Max Pierre – he put me on to MANGROVE Miami – AMAZING JAMAICAN food and incredible Selektahs curating the dopest reggae dancehall dub RAGGA roots and contemporary island vibes on the 1s and 2s.

If they’re a house or edm person I would see if my Homegirl Mimi is playing any domecile events downtown or in wynwood. Their collective is more hardcore electro house but Mimi (Emily) is a SUPER dope dj and artist herself.

Finally presuming they flew into the Hollywood airport I gotta take them by PEPPAZ KITCHEN in river oaks south broward county – ok sorry it’s not Miami PROPER but the guys at PEPPAZ kitchen have the best food out nobody better that’s 1620 sr84 by the American legion link with them it’s the most high culinary experience.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Amanda Nicole. God is a woman and that woman is Amanda Nicole. Amanda took notice I think right away that my approach was different and perhaps more intentional than she’d encountered before.

At the end of the day it’s weird for a 40 year old white guy to be submitting beats and hooks changing his voice via AI to sound like a girl in her 20s rapping and singing but as soon as Amanda gave me carte Blanche to create submissions for her project I went NUTS.

We had about a dozen beats / beats with hooks & or song concepts within a month and when she chose the ones she liked and wrote her verses it was like magic.

I think a lot of producers fail to ask artists “what do YOU want to say” at all. Nonetheless even if they do ask that question they don’t ask it FIRST.

For me that’s the FIRST thing I ask – THEN I say ok “cool well as a FAN I have these perspectives I think your fan base would be curious to know about” and/or “as a producer and pulse keeper of the culture I believe your current audience and or potential widening audiences would respond to THIS Sort of record – this type of vibe etc.”

So shout out to Amanda Nicole it’s called sardonic art people. Surrealism is a thing and there is a degree beyond Satire (sardonic) and I’m not saying she’s friggin RahDigga Mc wise (though don’t sleep on my shorty at all) I do believe her to be one of the most effective and creative artists of her generation – y’all don’t wanna “legitimize” it fine – call it surrealism it’s still fucking ART people!
