We had the good fortune of connecting with Charlotte Mirebeau and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Charlotte, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
We often hear those who started their own business explain something along the lines of how it’s always going to risky and how one must absolutely just start somewhere, stop delaying the process of starting your dream career or business! This is wonderful advice but the dynamic changes drastically once someone becomes a parent, especially being a single one like myself. This isn’t advice because everyone has different life circumstances but I decided on taking the risk of quitting college, the work force, and everything considered a societal norm to chase my dream career as an artist. This wasn’t always the plan but I knew after my jobs in the work force constantly breaking my spirit over my responsibilities as a mother, I decided I’ll never work for someone again who reprimands me for having to stay home with my sick child or even missing work due to an expected teachers planning day.
There’s still days and even weeks I apply to work force jobs again but whenever I do, I feel like I’m letting down the little art business I’ve worked so hard on curating. Not staying true to your personal work or goals starts to feel like you’re cheating on your own self. At some point you have to ask yourself “one day?” or “day one?”
I feel although bills are more difficult to manage as a self employer or small business owner due to not being guaranteed a biweekly paycheck, working for myself has brought such a positive impact to our home. The air feels lighter in the mornings without the fear of being 5 minutes late to work or having to call out because my child woke up with a fever. I have the option to keep my daughter from daycare if I want, even if she isn’t sick and we just want to spend time together! That’s my favorite part actually; being allowed time with my daughter and my own work, in which is more of a scarce resource than money. I can work on my own timing whether that’s 9 am or 11 pm. It seems harsh but I actually love it this way. My daughter and I still have our routine but having open options of how our day will go feels amazing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I would say my art is mostly inspired by my surroundings and passion for forests and mountains but I believe it also captures the fact I’m a Miami, FL native in the way I incorporate bright colors and contemporary aspects to natural settings. To me, it feels absolutely out of the world that my clients have the trust in me to literally paint their walls for a business or a home, create their logos, product labels, or even being commissioned for a canvas. It’s really the trust that my clients have in me that I’m the proudest of because it’s proof that the work I do is valuable and appreciated. Overcoming imposter syndrome has been the most helpful tool for monetizing my creative work. Overcoming the fear of rejection or the fear of not being good enough will open doors for you by simply pushing yourself to put yourself out there and gain exposure, market, or whatever it may be that you need to gain traction towards your business/products. I want everyone to know where my business really derived from such as my backstory because it really shows that you can make your dreams happen with commitment, focus, and a positive state of mind.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is such a fun question! I actually just had a friend visit two weeks ago. I’d take anyone visiting to a brewery in Asheville called New Belgium. They’re a popular brewery and I’ve seen their beers in stores and bars all over the country but they have such unique beers on tap in house. I’d also take anyone visiting up Pisgah National Forest during the day for a nice day hike or two, with some waterfall dips included and end the day with a sunset on an overlook up in the mountains. The views really are breathtaking. One night I’d dedicate for a dinner at may house and do s’mores in my fire pit. If there was time, I’d recommend anyone to visit Knoxville, TN or Gatlinburg, TN that are nearby and really nice as well.

If someone is visiting Miami, I’d recommend all sorts of food because really that’s the only thing I really miss from there aside from my family & friends. As far as food, I’d recommend the cheaper places because I don’t believe the pricier restaurants catch Miami’s essence as well. It’s places like Yambo’s or Palacio de los Jugos that capture the Latino culture in Miami. My daughter and I just went down last month for some murals I got commissioned for and the minute we came back up, my 3 year old daughter asked “Mommy, I want to go the bakery.” The pastelitos and cafecito is really unbeatable. For anyone who likes partying, I’d recommend going to Club Space for a real Miami experience on a Saturday night/Sunday morning.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Manuela Escobar – @ToyInvades – Wonderful friend of mine who assisted in motivating me to start murals! Eduardo Sagarnaga – Taught me how to operate a forklift and assists me with my murals in general.
Yovanny Fundora – @yfundora1 – A friend who connected me to a huge community of potential clients.
Elenise DaCruz – The lady who made me, my one and only mother. I love you Mamae!
