We had the good fortune of connecting with Chrislande Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Chrislande, how do you think about risk?
Being a risk taker has always been in my blood and I believe I can credit that to being the middle child out of seven children. At times, the middle child can be forgotten especially in a big family so I had to find a way to be seen and not forgotten like Kevin in Home Alone. At the top of my head, one of the risks I took was deciding that I wanted to run track late in my sophomore year. Many people told me I should start track early if I wanted to be the best but that doubt became my motivation to push myself harder. while everyone else took practice as a recess I took it with vigor because I had something to prove to myself and others. It may not be the biggest risk to others but to me, it’s something out of the norm.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
So, I wanted to do YouTube when I was in Elementary, but I did not have the equipment if someone found my drafts I would surely die. It was funny to see how much I wanted something at a young age, however, when I got to middle school, I took a risk. I used my older sister’s Apple iPhone which had better quality to start. When I started it was nerve-racking because I’m putting myself out there which gives others the right to judge and state their opinions let, they be negative or positive. I realized taking that chance was one of my best and proudest decisions because I’m not living in the “what if” moment. My YouTube Channel tells the story about who I am, what I enjoy, my growth, and getting over my fears of filming in public. My channel is a way to get into my intrusive thoughts and catch a glimpse of who I am good or bad. Also, it gives people a glimpse into who my family is since I am the 4th out of 7 children. A challenge I faced was I used to dance (contemporary, ballet, hip-hop) but I no longer dance as much and moving to track it got hard to film and I spent a couple of months not filming. When I was not filming my mom, used to set a fire under my butt to make sure I keep it up but encouraged and cursed me out as a Haitian would. Now, I can see the reason why she did because she was the push I needed to get back though it hurt at the time, my mom is not someone who sugarcoat things. When anyone watches a YouTube Channel one gets pulled toward the personality, and content of the creator. My taste may not be for everyone and that is okay but if I’m proud of it and my family are then I’ve succeeded and matter.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest shout-out is to my Lord Savior Jesus Christ. In my track career so far, I had a nasty fall and if it was not for God, I honestly cannot imagine how it would turn out. Second, I want to give a big shout-out to my family. Man, if only everyone knew the strength and encouragement I get from them. They always push me to be the best version of myself, supportive like no other, my ride and die, and truthfully, we are close-knit. Next, my coaches, teachers, and instructors who believed in me and pushed me. Lastly, Eric from Voyagemia contacted me about this project to get my words out.
