We had the good fortune of connecting with Coach Bud and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Coach Bud, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am born and raised in Davie Florida. I went to HS at University School of NSU on a Baseball Scholarship. I attended College at FIU on a Football Scholarship. The aspects of my background and upbringing that impacted me the most was my family dynamic. My childhood gave me a unique perspective on the difference between a childhood with two loving parents and a stable home and one that did not have those things. During my youth my father ran a successful family Dry Cleaning Business in Miami called 5 Point Cleaners. When I was in middle school he decided to sell the business and become a stay at home dad. This, combined with other factors led my dad to become consumed by his alcoholism. This led to some dark times during my Hs and College years. The stories from the ensuing years are far too many to discuss here. The highlights of this trauma would probably be my father’s DUI in front of my HS baseball team and his passing, in the backseat of my car on the way to the hospital. All of these trials and tribulations led me down a path that I was not completely proud of, but thankfully God put some amazing people in my path along to way to help save me from falling too far.
Going in depth here is probably best done over the phone, but this is why I’m so passionate about being a mentor and coach for the youth of South Florida.

What should our readers know about your business?
5 Star Studs is a Football specific training and mentorship service. What separates’ me from others in the industry is my approach to coaching and teaching the youth of today. A lot of coaches struggle to coach players from different generations.
I take pride in my ability to adapt my coaching vocabulary and style depending on the level of player I’m dealing with. I have coached players whose ages range from 7 all the way up to NFL players in their late 20s. This new generation of athlete does not operate the same as those from the past. The rules and culture of football have changed so quickly that the older generation struggles to relate and communicate with the current one.
Outside of communication, we offer a unique service that takes a wholistic approach to becoming a dynamic football player. We spend 50% of our training session working on “Position Specific Athlete Development Drills”. These drills work on the foundational skillset you need to become a high level lineman as well as learning proper weight lifting form. The other 50% of our workout is spent on Technique drills, always ending the workout with a “finisher” drill. We offer 1on1, group, and camp sessions.
The story of how we became a successful business was not an easy one. I started 5 Star Studs during August of 2020 in the midst of Covid. I started by offering free sessions to some of the HS kids I was helping coach at University School. I did this with the goal of filming and creating content for social media to build the brand. The biggest challenges for the new business was a consistent field location and being able to consistently film content at every session. These challenges were solved over time. My wife Carli played a huge role, sacrificing her free time to come and film all of my sessions so that we had content for social media. Finding a facility to host the business took more time but I was blessed to start a partnership with Gary Sanchez who owns Xtreme Fitness, an indoor gym that I have called home for the last two years.
I learned a lot of lessons along the way but the most meaningful ones were about relationships. without the meaningful relationships made along the way, I could never dream of being where i am.
I want 5 Star Studs to be remembered for providing a platform for the development and mentorship of lineman in South Florida. I want to be remembered as a coach who not only developed great players but one who helped develop great men and future leaders in South Florida.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I take a lot of pride in my recommendations for food in South Florida. If were going to get wings and a burger, there is only one spot I will go every time im in the area… Keg South Pinecrest. Special Grilled wings and a Keg Burger… never had anyone disappointed. When it comes to hanging out, i do alot of that at home these days.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This Shoutout for sure goes to my wife Carli Michele Budwig. I would not have been able to chase this dream of starting my own business without her unwavering support, on and off the field. She not only helped support me in the difficult transition away from playing football but continues to help me dream about what was possible in the future. She finds a way to help me any way she can and motivates me to keep pushing for more. Her list of contributions to the business are vast, but here are a few. – Social Media Manager/ Video and Photography of all sessions/ Website Developer/ Communication with Parents/ Registration and Event Flyer creation. She is not only an amazing wife but an incredible partner to have in the business.
