We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtenay Rushing and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Courtenay, why did you pursue a creative career?
I’ve been drawing and making things for as long as I can remember—it’s always just been a part of who I am. As I got older, that creative side naturally turned into a curiosity about how people experience design, which is what led me to study UX and graphic design at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Choosing a creative path felt like the most natural thing—it lets me blend imagination with purpose and make things that actually connect with people. The world of design and art is all around us, and I have always loved contributing to that world!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been someone who loves creating anything I can. I consider myself a jack of trades since I enjoy any medium of creating whether that’s through visual design, drawing, UX, or poetry. At SCAD, I founded and now run the Student Poetry Society, which has become one of the most meaningful parts of my creative life. It’s a space where people can show up as they are and be heard, and that mission has really shaped how I approach design, too.

There have been a lot of late nights, moments of doubt, and imposter syndrome along the way. But I’ve learned that showing up consistently, being open to feedback, and staying grounded in what makes your perspective unique makes all the difference.

What I want people to know about my work is that it’s rooted in care. Whether it’s an app, a brand system, or a spoken word piece, I try to design in a way that makes someone feel seen. That’s what drives me, and that’s the kind of work I want to keep putting into the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my closest friends happens to be my club vice president — Anna, a SCAD Senior studying illustration and an excellent writer. In St. Augustine, where I currently live, is a lovely beach which is the perfect place to hang out and relax from the stress of school. I would take us to the beach, visit lots of coffee shops, and talk for hours! Some of the most fun and memorable things to do is to simply hang out, talk, and enjoy all the little things.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother — the rock in my life — has provided me with more support than I could ever imagine.
