We had the good fortune of connecting with Crista Strachan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Crista, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
My balance has shifted tremendously especially during this pandemic and more so with making sure I give myself self-care. I think the balance could use some work because with working from home and creating content it can be a lot all at once. So making sure I put strict boundaries in place for myself is essential for my work life balance.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a blogger and content creator. What sets me apart is I’m a black woman from the Bahamas and I talk about carnival, Caribbean culture which is a very niche topic and not very mainstream when it comes to the world of blogging. I got to where I’m at right now by just telling my story through my love of writing and taking photos and videos but in a way that shares my experience and enables others to do the same. Yes there are a lot of challenges from being understood in mainstream media as a Caribbean creative or being understood by my peers, family. Some lessons I’ve learned along the way that stuck with me are: 1. staying consistent
2. Just starting
3. Collaboration over competition
I want the world to know that even though I’m from a small area of the world that’s just known for sun, sand and seas that our stories are just as important to be shared.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m actually based in South Florida at the moment. Best places that I would recommend right now in Fort Lauderdale/Miami area are Hollywood Beach or all the northern Miami beaches because they’re less crowded especially on week days. One of my favorite areas for food and drinks is the Riverwalk. It has restaurants like Rivertail, The Wharf Fort Lauderdale and Bodega Taqueria that have a lot of interesting events going on currently.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out all my followers, subscribers, readers and supporters who consistently show up for me when I create content. Like without them, none of this would be even fathomable. I never thought a few years back that I could actually live a life pursuing my passion like this. So if you’re reading this… thank you and I appreciate you!
