We had the good fortune of connecting with Cristian Suarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cristian, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Funny enough I think the reason I’m so drawn to the creative industry is because I’m so terrible at communicating through spoken words; whereas creating something (in any form) allows me to express myself freely without the risk of over sharing—while yet allowing myself to be completely vulnerable. Design allows me to say nothing and everything at the same time. Thankfully, my wife has the patience to deal with this sort of nonsense. Lucky for me, she’s an expert with verbal communication; so I’m able to better myself through her. I didn’t go to school for fashion, nor did anyone in my family have that sort of background. I just never had the money to buy new clothes, so I learned to be very resourceful by thrifting and finding designer clothes that fit beautifully or needed minimal tailoring. I also went through the phase every kid goes through trying to fit in by wearing hollister and Abercrombie, but over time I started realizing that because I don’t say much, my clothes end up doing most of the talking for me—and over time I realized I didn’t like the message it was sending. That’s why I started making garments; I wanted to make something that offers full control of the message being sent. That’s specifically why we exercise restraint when it comes to logo visibility because our goal is to preserve ones’ mystery, leave more for the imagination, and placing emphasis on the unique characteristics of both the garment and the person wearing it. Our goal isn’t to add value, but simply reveal what’s already there.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a Digital Marketing Manager by day and make garments by night. Finding the right balance between the two has its challenges, but is exactly why I don’t go to clubs, bars, or have many friends for that matter. Everyone closest to me knows that Liz gets first dibs on my free time, then whatever time is left over I budget for making clothes and possibly squeeze in quality time with close friends. It might not be the most ideal set up for a fast-fashion conglomerate, but it’s ideal for me. I get to spend the majority of my time with Liz, savor moments, create memories, and from those memories, I draw inspiration to make something new. It’s only when I allow myself to live in the moment is where my creative process begins.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
South Florida has some hidden gems. For the best korean food, try Myung Ga Tofu & Barbecue. For Japanese try, Marumi Sushi. And for boba tea, try Hanji and Kung Fu Tea.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First a foremost Liz Suarez, my wife, for her direction, encouragement, and support. Also, a huge thank you to Daygee Kwia and Eddy Sammy (Paperwater duo and founders of Half/Full Agency)–Thank you for all of the love and support.
