We had the good fortune of connecting with Cristina Vigliarolo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cristina, how does your business help the community?
I am very passionate about feminism and women’s rights. Growing up, my mother always taught me to be my own independent woman and never depend on any man. Especially with everything going on lately, it s essential for me to fight for women’s rights. When I lived in New York, I was on Planned Parenthood’s activist council and even lobbied for legislation to help women in areas such as education, healthcare, and reproductive rights. I went to the women’s march every year and continue to attend protests and rallies here in Miami. I also volunteer with Planned Parenthood, Banns of Our Bodies Miami, and other local organizations. I also write about feminist issues on my blog. I like to inform people of these issues and also offer my opinion. I will also write about my experiences volunteering. I try to help the community in any way I can and love to share it on my blog.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Fashion styling and makeup are my art. It may sound superficial, but it’s my life. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I tried many different areas of fashion before I settled on fashion styling. When I was in high school thought I could be a designer. Then I took sewing and drawing classes and realized I couldn’t draw and hated sewing, so I switched to business with hopes of becoming a buyer or stylist. Then I went to the Fashion Institute of Technology for business, and I was bored with constantly writing papers. After this, I felt very lost and almost gave up on fashion. But I realized this is what I love doing and came to Istituto Marangoni Miami to study fashion styling. Creating shoots for my site or school can be difficult when you are a “broke college student.” It’s super important to use your resources. It’s harder when they are limited. Sometimes I borrow clothes from work or friends or beg stores to lend them to me (haha). I rely on friends, colleagues, and connections. Making connectors is super important, so I try to go to any event my school offers and take people’s information whenever possible. For photographers, I can’t always afford the fee of professionals. I often seek out friends or photography students for a lower rate. Other than that, I take photos with my phone on a tripod and with a Bluetooth remote! I want people to see my brand and me as a sassy, fashionable, knowledgeable feminist!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When anyone comes to Miami, I always take them to the beach. I am not a fan of South Beach, but it’s famous, so I take them there for a beach day and to see the art deco buildings on ocean drive and the Versace Mansion (I’m a fashion nerd.) Palace drag bar is one of my favorite places to take friends; it’s so much fun to go for drag brunch or a show! I always recommend Havannah 1957 for Cuban Food. Also, the Carlyle hotel is for fans of the movie The Birdcage. Another one of my favorite places to eat is Cantina La Viente in Brickell for Mexican Food, Mariachi entertainment, and a beautiful view. I also love The Little Hen for brunch and pictures! I would take them to The Wharf, Mangos for salsa dancing,1-800 Lucky, Oasis Wynwood El Tucan, Mint, or bar hopping in Wynwood to go out. Speaking of Wynwood, it’s perfect for shopping or taking pictures of fantastic artwork and wall art. For shopping, I would take them to the design district (I am partial because I go to school there) and for pictures. (Sorry, I live my life in pictures, haha), Brickell City Center or Lincoln Road. I also recently discovered the Time Out food market, and I love it. It’s a cool market that not many people know about. I love The Salty Donut in Wynwood, Night Owl Cookies, or Azucar in Little Havana for sweet treats. It may seem touristy, but I did a food tour of Little Havana with my mom the last Time she visited, and it was amazing! Even if you live in Miami, it’s nice to discover new places. Sal’o is great for Mojitos. Vizcaya is one of my favorite places and also beautiful to visit and take pictures of, and so is the Spanish Monastery in North Miami. In Coral Gables, the Biltmore hotel is lovely to hang out by the pool or have dinner.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents definitely for supporting me in my decisions, like moving to Miami. Especially my mom and my titi for gifting me with my love of fashion. I love and miss my Abuelita, who is constantly an inspiration for me and is always there for me. I am also inspired by women business owners and designers like Diane VOn Furstenburg, Betsey Johnson, and Chiara Ferrangi. I am very inspired by their stories and aspire to be like them!
