We had the good fortune of connecting with Dahlia Canes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dahlia, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Being true to yourself, speaking up for what you beleive in and applying compassion on a day to day basis.

What should our readers know about your business?
I graduated in 1985 from Florida National University, with an Associates Science Degree becoming a Paralegal. Since then I’ve practiced with numerous attorneys, but mostly with the firm of “Gregory A. Moore, P.A. I mostly deal with Personal Injury and Animal Law, although I’ve dabbled in Criminal Law. The obstacles to rightfully serve your clients, both 2 and 4 legged ones, is forever challenging. They come first as they are the ones that have suffered the consequences. I’m extremely lucky that I enjoy what I do, although sometimes you start questioning your sanity!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Miami has been in a whirlwind of change in the past few years. I’m constantly finding new places to go to. Since my home is in Cutler Bay, Black Point comes to mind. My all time favorite place is the “Hermita De La Caridad Del Cobre” (Our Lady of Charity), located in the Grove. It’s has miraculous energy restoring your faith. Of course there’s always the Florida Keys and a short flight to Eleuthera, Bahamas is always there.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am a Cuban/American and I arrived in this country as a political refugee in 1959. Leaving your homeland at such an early age, without rhyme or reason, leaves lasting footprints. I experienced first hand at the age of 6 the meaning of the word, “discrimination.” I was called a “Spic” and paid the harrasment price. Therefore, I overcompensated by excelling in any matter that came before me. As an adult, in my proffesional life, I was faced with the ” Glass Ceiling. When I finally came to terms with my sexual preference and realized it was OK to be Gay, I undertook the challenge by fighting for LGBTQ rights. I was a founding board member for “Unity Coalition.” Finally, owning American Pit Bull Terriers in Miami Dade County and the “Pit Bull Ban” controversy, it is of no wonder I now fight Breed Specific Legislation, via the Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation, of whom I am the Founder and Director, . Who do I accredit who I am today to? My parents Rafael and Carmen Canes, my “Gallega” Grandmother “Emilia” and of course my dogs…whom without them (past and present) I would not have learned the meaning of dignity and compassion. I owe them all my life.
