We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I think after a certain point in your life you realize that you are not going to live forever, and you really do not know how much time you are going to get on this Earth. In 2008 I endured a terrible injury to my hands. I was fortunate to recover quickly and fully, but I realized that I had not been drawing and painting like I once did prior to my corporate career in the video game industry. Fate stepped in almost 3 years later in the form of a lay off, and my Wife and I determined that the time was right for me to walk away from that industry.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I guess the most important aspect I would want people to know about my Art work is that it is original, and that I have been creating this kind of work for a very, very long time. I have walked away from it for years at a time, but I have always returned to the subject matter depicted in my paintings and drawings. It is very dark and intense work, but that is what has naturally come from me for as long as I can remember. After my injuries, I started painting florals because that is what I drew and painted when I was a child enrolled in the Dade County Magnet programs. I had to learn how to paint again, so in my head I returned to the earliest part of my life in order to find my way back artistically.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, living in South Florida has tremendous benefits when it comes to dining. For food, and in no particular order I would take them to Wolf’s Steakhouse in Cooper City, Rustic Inn Crabhouse in Fort Lauderdale, and no trip to South Florida would be complete without paying a visit to Versailles in Miami for some of the best and most authentic Cuban food you will find. Also, I would have to make it a point to pay a visit to News Cafe on Ocean Drive in South Beach, and I would also have to pick up one of Terry’s famous key lime pies over at Bob Roth’s New River Groves on Griffin Road in Davie. Finally, a visit to Tate’s Comics in Lauderhill would be in order. There you will find the most incredible Comics, and Collectibles Toy store in South Florida, complete with the Bear and Bird Boutique and Art Gallery located in the loft of the store. These guys have been a South Florida staple for over 30 years.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Wife. She is, and always has been my best friend, and the most positive and supportive person I have ever known or been around in my entire life. Without her love and support I would not be where I am today.
