We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Herrera and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Daniel, how do you think about risk?
I’ve always believed that on the other side of fear lies something amazing. Everything truly worth having in life comes with some level of risk. I’d rather take a chance and have it not work out than live with the regret of never knowing what could have been. Growing up, my dad would always say, “What’s the worst someone can say? No? Who cares, go for it!” That stuck with me, and over the years I’ve seen firsthand that risks are often worth the reward. From making a bold career change 15 years ago, leaving teaching to join law enforcement, to writing and publishing a children’s book and experiencing the incredible opportunities that followed, none of it would have happened if I hadn’t faced my fears and stepped into the unknown.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m proud of every professional role I’ve held, each one giving me the opportunity to serve in a different way. As a School Resource Officer, I get to make a positive impact on today’s youth, building trust and guiding them toward better choices. As a Hostage/Crisis Negotiator, I’m called into the most intense situations and tasked with de-escalating them without the loss of life, a responsibility I consider both a privilege and an honor.

More recently, as a children’s book author, I’m proud to provide teachers and parents with a valuable resource to help kids stay confident and prepared in the event of an emergency. The release of my book has opened doors to new opportunities, from speaking engagements and workshops to trainings on school safety, communication, de-escalation, and negotiation.

I got here by being relentlessly driven and refusing to let anyone tell me I couldn’t achieve what I set my heart on. Nothing worth having comes easy. I’ve faced my share of obstacles, but I’ve learned that perseverance, self-belief, and a willingness to adapt are key. Truth is, I feel like I’m just getting started. My mission is to serve as many people as possible, in as many ways as possible. It won’t be easy, but I wouldn’t bet against me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’d kick off the morning with a workout, either lifting or a Jiu Jitsu session at UFC Gym Midtown to get the energy flowing. After that, breakfast at Deli Lane Café & Sunset Tavern is a must as it’s the perfect spot to refuel and catch up.

From there, we’d make our way to Bravo Tattoo Miami, where the incredibly talented Mercedes Bravo (the best tattoo artist in the business) would hook us up with some fresh ink.

Dinner and drinks would be at Houston’s for great food and a relaxed vibe, and depending on the season, we’d wrap up the night cheering on one of Miami’s teams, whether it’s the Marlins or the Heat. If there’s time we’d definitely catch a Dolphins game on Sunday. No matter what, the week would be a perfect mix of action, great eats, and unforgettable memories.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, my wife Cristy has always encouraged me to follow my heart. She’s never once told me not to pursue something I truly wanted to do. She didn’t marry a police officer, she married a school teacher, but she supported my career change wholeheartedly, just as she’s supported my journey with my children’s book and everything in between. I also have to give a huge shoutout to my parents. They’re the best parents a man could ask for, my biggest fans, my constant encouragers, and a source of unwavering love and support. I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
