We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Bricker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dave, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always been a bit of a Jack of All Trades—writing, speaking, code, design, music. I started a graphics and web company back in 1995 but I outgrew that category. In January of 2018, I started Remarkable Stories, Inc. Instead of worrying about what skills I offer, I help leaders and organizations tell their stories in more engaging ways. Sometimes that means coaching speakers. Sometimes that means editing a book. The WHAT—the medium—doesn’t really matter. The outcome for clients is messages that connect, engage, and succeed.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I spent many years sailing, mostly solo, on a small sailboat. After finding the true adventure stories I’d gone in search of, I returned to the land of clocks and calendars. I carried those stories with me for 20 years before I figured out how to use them in my professional life. It turns out we all have oceans to cross. We all need to learn to trust our compass. We all need to stand our watches. We encounter storms and calms. We run aground once in a while. And if you’re the captain, you need to learn that EVERYTHING that happens on your ship is your responsibility, no matter who screwed it up. What sets Remarkable Stories, Inc. apart is the backstory that informs everything we offer. The focus is on helping people communicate well, not on selling this service or that service. Remarkable Stories clients are working on a speech, and ad campaign, website copywriting, a fresh design, or a book. They’re looking for someone who understands the nuances of messaging, not for someone who knows how to write CSS code or how to use the clone tool in Photoshop. Clients gain confidence along with a deeper understanding of the value they offer and how to communicate that value to others.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m not an “about town” sort of person, so my “hang-outs” tend to be off the. path. I love Fairchild Gardens as a serene, natural setting that’s easy to get to. Given good weather, a day sailing on Biscayne Bay is always refreshing. The 15-mile bike trail loop at Shark Valley is a good early morning activity. For something more civilized, rent a pedal-car at MetroZoo and get out before the weekend crowds arrive. All of my in-person people-centric activities have been suspended due to COVID19. We’ll have to see what survives the storm (though Old Lisbon restaurant is always a great spot for seafood).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
In particular, my colleagues at the National Speakers Association—Dr. Margarita Gurri, Caroline de Posada, Bruce Turkel, and many others—have pushed me forward on my speaking and storytelling path.
