We had the good fortune of connecting with David Márquez García and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
What was your thought process behind starting your own business?

-My passion for fashion has always been there for as long as I can remember, since I was very little I loved going out to the shops with my mother and giving her my opinion on the looks she wore. This passion led me to want to study fashion and design academically and specialize in fashion styling, to be able to work as a stylist for the great divas that I have always admired.

What’s one thing about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?

– As a curious fact, it should be noted that when I talk to people outside the world of fashion or styling, they have no idea, for example, that brands lend their clothes to the stylist to dress the celebrity, and then these clothes are returned to the brand.
Another thing that I would like to mention is the great work and time invested that can be behind a project. I just did the Latin Grammys with Thalia and I’ve been working on this red carpet for two months. Many people think that this job is quick and easy, but it is not. Behind a look there is a lot of time invested, talking to designers, looking for the most impressive dress, working to make the celebrity shine…

Risk taking: how do you think about risk, what role has taking risks played in your life/career?

I believe that to win you have to take risks. This is not an easy profession and you have to make many decisions that have taken me out of my comfort zone, but they have been worth it. My career constantly leads me to make decisions that are often dizzying, but most of the time things turn out well.

Other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?

-The step of making my way in the United States as a stylist I think has been one of the decisions that has taken me out of my comfort zone the most but I consider that I am having very good results.

What is the most important factor behind your success / the success of your brand?

-I believe that the value behind my success lies in my creativity when it comes to creating looks. I consider that I am very good at combining the trend of the moment, sophistication with a touch of spectacularity and fantasy.

What’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?

-As I mentioned before, I think the most difficult decision has been to accept projects in the American continent. I am Spanish, and I travel frequently to New York or Miami, and it is difficult especially because you spend many moments away from family and friends, but as I said before, the result is worth it.

Work life balance: how has your balance changed over time? How do you think about the balance?

– Traveling constantly, I try to balance my life as much as possible. No matter what city I’m in at the time, I try to stick to my eating and training routine so I can feel good and do my best at work. It is essential to have a good diet, exercise and sleep enough to face projects with energy and enthusiasm.
At the family level, whenever I can, I try to be close to my parents, spending time with them. Since they are my biggest pillar in life.

Do you have a favorite quote or affirmation? What does it mean to you / what do you like about it?

-To be irreplaceable, one must always seek to be different. From Coco Chanel.
I consider that this quote is very good to take as a reference as a stylist, since a styling professional must be distinguished by having their own identifiable style. That is a great value as a stylist, that they look for you for being different from the rest.

Why did you pursue an artistic or creative career?

-Because of my vocation for fashion and because I love creating looks, combinations.
I think that through fashion and how we dress we can transmit many messages and this is an art that I love.

What do you want your legacy to be? What do you want people to remember about you?

-I would love to create iconic looks that will be remembered over the years. That people identify those looks and quickly they think of me.
I would love to get people seeing a look of mine, without crediting that I am the stylist, to quickly identify it and know that it is mine because of the style.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a celebrity stylist. With great versatility because I cover works from red carpets, styling for music videos, shooting, editorials, events. But I have to say that when I enjoy the most is on the red carpets. I love haute couture, and in these types of events I can let my creativity run wild with haute couture designs.
It is because of this taste that I have for haute couture that I stand out from other stylists, bringing the most spectacular and avant-garde haute couture fashion to events.
I have gotten to where I am because of my talent but above all because of my perseverance in always moving forward. It is not easy, but little by little I have been achieving my dreams and gaining recognition from others.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of the trips that I have taken and that I have liked and surprised the most has been my trip to Budapest. The Hungarian capital is spectacular, the beauty of its architecture, the city divided by the Danube into two parts: Buda and Pest; that are united by majestic bridges. My favorite is the chain bridge.
If you go to Budapest, you cannot miss a walk along the impressive Andrassy avenue, full of wonderful buildings, among which the Budapest Opera stands out, on the avenue we also find the best fashion boutiques.
The Basilica of San Esteban, where you cannot miss visiting the dome, the views are spectacular. The Parliament of Budapest, the second largest in the world, is impressive, you cannot miss the opportunity to take a cruise along the Danube at night to see how beautiful the city is.
It is also an obligatory visit to visit the emblematic Café Paris to eat or have a coffee.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Of course, I want to thank first of all the support that I have always received and still receive from my parents. I would also like to thank the Spanish journalist and writer Marta Robles, who gave me my first opportunity as a stylist.
And of course Thalia who also gave me the opportunity to work for her. Thanks to her I am receiving international recognition and many doors have been opened for me in fashion.
