Meet Dawn Drake | Florist – Shop Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Drake and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dawn, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Taking over the flower shop two years ago brought me an unexpected joy. It’s been an incredible experience to be part of so many meaningful moments in people’s lives—weddings, baby showers, birthdays, holidays, and even the simple, everyday gestures that bring a smile.
Flowers have a unique way of spreading happiness and beauty. They lift spirits, brighten rooms, and say what words sometimes can’t. Even during life’s more somber moments, flowers offer comfort and peace, serving as a beautiful reminder of love and connection.
Being able to create and share that joy with others through floral design has truly been a gift.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I’ve had a diverse and rewarding career journey, working in a variety of industries and environments. My background includes holding a corporate position, owning a commercial furniture business, running a home staging and design company, and becoming a licensed realtor. Originally from South Florida, I moved to the Florida Keys several years ago and have been part of the wedding industry ever since.
I served as Director of Sales at a top resort for several years before being presented with the opportunity to purchase a well-established flower and gift shop. Leveraging my experience with weddings, strong relationships with planners, venue managers, and talented local professionals, I increased the shop’s sales by over 20% within the first six months of ownership.
I credit much of my success—both in past careers and in my current business—to a strong focus on customer service and attention to detail. I always strive to go above and beyond for my clients. Over the years, I’ve received glowing reviews from brides at Cheeca Lodge, Pierre’s, and the Islander Resort, and now continue that tradition of excellence through my shop.
Taking on floral design has been an incredible blessing and learning experience. Providing full floral services for weddings and events has truly become a passion, and I’m grateful for the chance to bring beauty and joy to such meaningful celebrations.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d kick off the day by taking my boat out to one of the local reefs for some snorkeling, then cruise over to the Islamorada sandbar for drinks and lunch. We usually pack our own, but there’s also a floating food barge if you’re hungry! Living in the Keys gives us the amazing perk of enjoying waterfront restaurants and bars year-round. Many spots feature live music, great food, and refreshing drinks. A few of my favorites are Dive Bar, Snappers, and Lorelei. For one of the best sunsets in the Upper Keys, you can’t beat the Caribbean Club. And if we’re still up for some fun after dark, Hog Heaven or Whistle Stop are our go-to late-night spots.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My children have always been my greatest inspiration. They motivate me to lead by example and show them that change—while sometimes scary—can also be exciting, positive, and deeply rewarding. At 50 years old I made a bold move and completely shifted careers, I’m proud to be running another successful business.
I believe it’s never too late to start over, to pursue something you love, and to find joy in what you do. More than anything, I want my children to know they always have choices in life—and that courage, curiosity, and passion can take them anywhere.
