We had the good fortune of connecting with Deeana Peter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deeana, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I prefer to refer to it as just life balance. Work is part of life and when we separate it out it makes it feel that we shouldn’t have to work. Even wealthy folks work (though their work may be more enjoyable and they may have more flexibility to decide when to work but it’s always going to be part of life) vacation is also part of life but we never hear about vacation life balance, however if all you did was vacation then other areas of your life would suffer. In life balance I try to remember that I’m a multifaceted woman. I love to travel, but I also enjoy alone time decorating my home. I love my job but I also enjoy time with my family to recharge. There are some seasons in my job where it is extremely busy and taking time off is not feasible…I will happily work through those moments knowing that during the down time at my job I can be generous in my time off request. Understanding that there is a time for everything has been the most impactful way I achieve life balance

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is my self. I am a plus size woman from the island of Dominica (try to think of you know anyone else who fits that description and I bet you don’t) my upbringing and perspective makes me unique . Sharing my life experiences on my social media platforms allowed me to grow a following of almost 5k. Consistency and staying true to myself has been the fuel to my success. There are so many people sharing on social media and you’re tempted to be like everyone else but I’ve learned my uniqueness is what attracts people to me. When people see me and my art I want them to know that you don’t always have to Khelsea fully ready before you start something…start where you are and learn along the way. I want them to know that you are beautiful just the way you are

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Though it may be cliché I would dedicate my shoutout to my mom. She is the most selfless and hardworking person I know . I am who I am today, because of the lessons she instilled in me
