We had the good fortune of connecting with Delyanne Barros and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Delyanne, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My ability to empathize with my audience is a major factor in my success. If you don’t have empathy then you don’t deserve a platform. Whatever you are selling or teaching, you have to be able to understand that everyone’s experience is unique. Although you can’t speak to every single person’s experience, you can leave room to acknowledge that your way is not the only way. That is what’s so off-putting about many creators in the personal finance space. They become entrenched in their own beliefs and systems and refuse to see that there are challenges that are not fixable by grit and hard work alone. There are systems in place that are set up as roadblocks for certain people like women and minorities. I have been lucky enough to be able to overcome some of those systems but that doesn’t make me better than anyone else. It just so happens that my opportunities lined up with my work ethic, but there are many many people who work their ass off and are still denied opportunities everywhere they turn. I do my best to equip my audience with knowledge that they can use if they find themselves in a place where their opportunity is overlapping with their work ethic and I still try to hold these larger systems accountable. If you lead with authentic empathy your chances of success are much higher because you are putting audience’s success before your own.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My journey as a business owner is the biggest surprise of my life. I’ve always said that I was a worker bee and not the queen bee, but I didn’t realize that I was living in the wrong hive. I’m an immigrant from Brazil and I put myself through college and law school. I worked for 14 years as an employment attorney and it was a struggle every day, but that’s what I thought working was supposed to be. I didn’t realize that you could actually be successful pursuing a passion.
When I started Delyanne The Money Coach, where I teach new investors how to Slay the Stock Market and achieve financial independence, it was only as a hobby in my mind. But it turned something on inside of me that was dormant for so long that it shocked me. I couldn’t stop working on my business. I worked 12-14 hours day when I started and I did this all throughout 2020 which helped distract me during the pandemic and all the chaos that was happening. I funneled all that energy into my business and my students.
I worked more than I had ever worked in my life, but I felt more energized than ever. I knew I was building something that would change people’s lives. Every testimonial that I received fueled me and kept me going whenever I had moments of doubt.
One of the most challenging aspects of a business was sales and marketing. Even if you have a winning service, you have to know how to communicate with your audience and having a popular Instagram account isn’t enough. My sister and business coach, Nathalia Copeland, was the lifeline that made my coaching program a viable business. I think everyone should have a business coach. It’s a game changer.
Today I am most proud of the fact that I’m making a difference in helping to close the wealth gap for women and people of color. I’m so proud of my Latina students who are immigrants or first-gen and are changing what they thought would be their narrative. So many of them saw their parents struggle and never be able to retire and they believed that would be their life too. Now they have plans to invest and grow their wealth and live a financially free life that they had only dreamed of. Some of them are now able to build generational wealth by passing this knowledge on to their parents and their children.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is a city built for the outdoors. I would rent a convertible and we would take a road trip up the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping in little beach towns along the way. You can’t visit California and not take in the breathtaking sunsets every night. I’ve had some spiritual moments watching some epic sunsets in Coronado and sunset cliffs. Other outdoor activities would be hiking at Torrey Pines, paddle boarding at Mission Bay, and bike riding on the boardwalk.
Of course there would be so much food on the itinerary. Maybe even a little getaway to Baja Mexico for authentic Mexican food and a trip to Villa De Guadalupe for wine tasting.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to shoutout my sister and business coach, Nathalia Copeland. She believed in me before I even thought there was something to believe in. As soon as I pitched the idea for a money coaching business she was on board and pushed me every step of the way. She taught me everything about starting a business, from tech to sales and marketing. Her passion for what she does is so infectious you can’t help feeling inspired every time you talk to her.
Another huge source of inspiration is my favorite book by Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist. I’ve read it in Portuguese and in English and I absolutely carry it with me in my heart. My favorite takeaway from it is that when you follow your destiny, the universe conspires in your favor.
