We had the good fortune of connecting with Denzel McCausland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Denzel, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
If I had to sum it up, I would say tenacity and belief. No matter how bad it gets, and as an actor and just in my life things have gotten really bad at times, but I have to constantly remind myself to keep moving forward. At times my feet feel weighed down or I may simply want to stop all together, but I know within myself I have come so far and honestly too far for me to just stop now. I have to believe that the goal can be achieved and be tenacious enough to keep going. Trust and believe it is not easy to do this consistently, but there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel and I know achieving my goals are at the end of my tunnel.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am primarily an actor. I dabble in designing, writing and art. As far what makes me stand out, I think it’s just that I am who I am. Thats a blasé response I know, but I feel like everyone has a “thing”, something that allows them to shine when they do it and mine just happens to be in the arts. When I am on stage performing I want to connect to the audience and when creating anything I just want to be true to myself and I like to think that my truthfulness or attempt to be truthful allows for me to standout.

I am most proud of the fact that I have been able to perform professionally. I haven’t reached my goal by a long shot just yet, however I feel that we all need to be able to offer praise for what we’ve done so far in life and I give myself a pat on the back and persevering through what I have gone through so far and I made it here. I am excited for the future and what it holds. I believe I make it to the very top of the craft and I am excited to make it there. I am also excited to be doing this interview right now, truly a pleasure and I am honored to have asked to do this, so thank you.

I got here by taking a chance in college and deciding to major in Theatre. From there so many doors have opened by just staying committed and continuing to want to achieve a goal. I said it like it was easy but it wasn’t. Every day was a struggle to truly try and overcome my own self doubt and my fear of failure. I still compete with those things to this day. I wish I could have the most confidence in the world, but sadly I don’t. I get through it though by believing in myself. Like I said before, everyone has that “thing” and because of that I know that I am enough and I can achieve in any role given to me. Also, having people in my corner has allowed me to not put everything on my shoulders. I have had struggles with asking for help, but nothing is possible without others backing you up in someway. No one makes it to the top by the themselves. I had to learn that.

I want the world to know that I am just a kid from Dade County. I am no better than any man, woman or child. I say that to stress that anything you see me or anyone do is always possible. Nothing is impossible. The only way to make a dream happen is to believe in it. Never lose that inner child and never fear failure. Failure is just a sign that things could be improved. Nothing is perfect, so stop trying to be. You’re dope the way you are.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
That is such a loaded question. I have so many people to thank, but I would be remiss to not thank The Pen Players of Miami-Dade College for being the first ones to acknowledge me as an actor. The New City Players for giving me my first professional opportunity and being the branching off point of my career. The Art Prevails Project for seeing me as a creative and allowing me to see that there is still untapped potential within myself. Every one at Fly Supply Clothing for the overwhelming amount of support as I began to work professionally. Every actor, actress, director, and stage manager I have had the pleasure of working with because they trusted me to carry my weight and each has made me a better artist. My family and friends who have been on this crazy ride with me. I can honestly say I would not be here without each interaction I have had with all of these people and they have made me better in every way. Lastly, and most importantly, my mother and brother because they raised me to be here. I hope to make each person in this vast group proud someday.
