Meet Diego Texera | Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Diego Texera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diego, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Photography suits me very well because I have a keen eye for detail and love cameras. Photography is an art that is also a science. You use traditional artistic skills to manipulate what’s in front of you from an aesthetic perspective, but then you also have to manipulate the machine and lighting by doing math in your head in order to manipulate the technical part of capturing images. I love using both sides of my brain concurrently when there’s a bunch of moving parts on set and that’s why this suits me so well.
In order to be effective as a visual artist, or any type for that matter, it’s important to have a keen eye for detail. This attention to detail is my superpower and I feel that without it I couldn’t have made it this far as a creative professional. The part I love the most about doing what we do is that very rarely do shoots ever look similar. There’s always something different about the client, subject matter, location, lighting, etc… This is my favorite part of being a photographer. We’re there to solve creative and technical problems and I love that.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Early in life I don’t think I ever considered myself an artist, I was just playing with computers. I knew I had some creative skills early, but never really considered it until after high school. When I was young I had a small business that offered graphic design, websites and marketing. I had a computer, knew how to use Photoshop already and it allowed me to make money being creative so I was making make my own schedule and it was sort of satisfying work. I had always owned cameras, studied film photography in college but I never gained a real interest in photography until I was exposed to the world of commercial photography. After I grew tired of design I decided in 2008 to purchase a brand new digital camera system with a bunch of accessories and learn the ropes of commercial photography. I had no idea what I was doing but I was having a great time. In 2013 I opened my business and never looked back. Since then it’s been one job after another….and 8 years later I’m blessed that I can’t even remember all the shoots I’ve done. I remember when I could count them, and now I’m constantly running out of space on my backup drives.
No freelance creative will ever say this is easy, because it’s not…and many will candidly admit to being on the verge of closing up shop at least once…and I’m no different. 2020 was a year to forget… by far the biggest issue I’ve ever faced and will probably be paying the damages from this for a few years but I get up every day to see the sun rise and the birds still singing. Nobody wants to do business with a Debbie downer so staying positive and being accommodating, generous and hard-working will lead you out of the dark days and towards greener pastures.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m at the stage in life where most of my friends have small children, or have outgrown the nightlife scene…so I’d probably suggest a few dinner spots and some natural exploration in the Everglades and a pit stop at the Clyde Butcher Gallery if the kids are behaving. For my friends without tiny dictators stealing all their cash I’d strongly suggest a stay at The Confidante on Miami Beach and invite me over on Sunday for drinks by the pool.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My wife is constantly the one pushing me past my comfort zone in all matters professional and personal. Thanks to her generosity and confidence in me, she allowed me to finally make the jump and quit my job and start my own business in 2013, before we were even married. Now that we’re a family and have a child, she continues to impress everyone that knows her and demonstrate how difficult life would be without her. I can only do what I do because she does what she does, not the other way around.
