Meet the Broward International Women’s Club a non-profit all volunteer organization giving scholarships to international students

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dinora Mclellan, VP of Ways and Means and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dinora, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The Broward International Women’s Club (BIWC) has thrived as a vibrant hub for women of diverse backgrounds to connect, collaborate, and empower one another. The cornerstone of BIWC’s success is its commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive community. This focus on connections has led to remarkable achievements, creating a space where women can share their experiences, ideas, and aspirations. The club’s members come from various countries and cultures, enriching the group with diverse perspectives and promoting cross-cultural understanding.
Diversity sparks innovation and broadens horizons. By valuing and celebrating these differences, BIWC is more than just a social gathering; it is a platform for women to learn from, support, and foster new friendships that transcend borders. Philanthropy has been another foundation of BIWC’s success. The club has made significant contributions to international students in need through fundraising for scholarships and supporting local charities. Since its inception in 1975, BIWC’s long-standing scholarship program has provided scholarships to over 380 students from more than 40 countries. These scholarships help individuals, particularly women, pursue higher education and achieve their goals. Many recipients become leaders in their respective fields, amplifying the club’s impact on both local and global communities.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets BIWC apart is its holistic approach to enabling international students through education, leadership, and collaboration, creating a ripple effect that resonates globally.
Scholarship Program: a cornerstone since its founding. These scholarships open doors for young international students to pursue higher education, achieve their goals, and make a difference in their communities. BIWC’s investment in education reflects its belief in the power of knowledge as a pathway to equality and opportunity.
Global Sisterhood: BIWC is proud of its diverse membership, spanning multiple continents, cultures, and languages. With women from over 40 countries, the club serves as a melting pot where different perspectives are shared and celebrated.
Sustained Commitment: BIWC’s philanthropic efforts go beyond one-time donations or events. The long-standing scholarship program is just one example of its sustained commitment to social good. By focusing on initiatives with lasting impact—such as education and mentorship—BIWC creates an ecosystem of support for future generations.
Future Goals: BIWC is excited about the continued success of its scholarship program, and support for leadership development. The club aims to expand its reach both locally and globally, strengthening relationships with international organizations and promoting education and leadership opportunities for students worldwide.
Mission: BIWC is dedicated to helping students to achieve their fullest potential through education, leadership, and a global network of like-minded women. The club’s success is measured by the lives it touches and the meaningful connections it fosters. BIWC’s story is one of resilience, empowerment, and global sisterhood, making it a beacon of hope and a platform for positive change.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting the area for a week-long trip, I’d want to show them the best mix of local culture, outdoor activities, good food, and cool spots to hang out. Here’s a fun and exciting itinerary that would guarantee an unforgettable time!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As we reflect on the club’s success, it’s important to recognize the visionary leadership of our founder, Olga Ortiz Mera, and the dedicated presidents, members, and corporate sponsors. Their commitment to BIWC’s mission has allowed the club to expand its reach and impact on lives worldwide. Founded in 1975 by Olga Ortiz Mera, the Broward International Women’s Club was created to support women from diverse backgrounds. Olga’s passion for community building established BIWC as a beacon of cross-cultural understanding, professional development, and charitable giving. Her legacy continues to influence the club today. BIWC has been fortunate to have exceptional presidents who have guided the club through various growth phases. Their leadership has expanded the club’s reach, created a network of engaged members, and established meaningful partnerships. They have also built upon Olga’s vision by providing scholarships, creating pathways for students to succeed. The heart of BIWC lies in its dedicated members. Their efforts have created a strong, supportive community that has stood the test of time. The diverse backgrounds and talents of BIWC members enrich the club with a unique dynamic of collaboration.
BIWC’s success is also due to the generous support of corporate sponsors. Key partners like Nova Southeastern University (NSU) have been essential in advancing the club’s mission and expanding opportunities for international students. Other sponsors, including the Rick Case Automotive Group, PEGroup, Charm Eyewear, Cross Key Capital, AC Schultes, The Ziegelbaum Group, Virtue Medical Staffing, Green Grass Professional Lawns, Legacy Financial Network, Central Broward Animal Hospital, and Andrew J Adler DMD, have played an instrumental role in supporting scholarship initiatives. This sustained support has created a lasting impact, helping scholarship recipients become leaders in their communities and fields.
