We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ A-Beatz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ A-Beatz, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued a creative and artistic career because as a child I always gravitated towards music. I remember being 12 years old and playing records on my mother’s turntable. The stereo she had also had an 8 track player and I would mess with the knob and was able to play the records and the 8 track tapes at the same time. I was mixing! During this time I was listening to my favorite DJs on the radio like Chuck Chillout and Red Alert in NYC and started mimicking the mixing and scratching I heard on the radio. Little did I know that I was laying the foundation to my future endeavors. It was the beginning of my passion for music and DJing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been a DJ for over 30 years. The first 15 years were the building blocks of my career. From starting off in my mother’s living room, DJing for an audience of one, to DJing block parties house parties and spinning in bars in the lower east side of New York City. I wouldn’t change anything about those first 15 years as they were the foundation of what I do today. Approximately 15 years ago, I moved with my family from New York City to Miami to pursue my passion. It was a tough grind at first. I literally went from bar to bar, establishment after establishment looking for a DJ gig. While I looked, I found a part-time job folding clothes at night at a Hollister clothing store. I remember how miserable and scared I was that I wasn’t gonna make it and I’d be at this store forever. Eventually, I answered an ad from a small company looking for DJs, and got hired. To this day I still work for Kara-O-King entertainment and they helped me expand my talents as a DJ and MC by teaching me a new skill, Karaoke hosting. It really wasn’t something that I had planned, but it definitely paid dividends. Throughout the years I have worked at dozens and dozens of venues in South Florida and have also DJed and hosted events for celebrities like Dwayne Wade, Gabriel Union, Cuba Gooding Jr and more. I am extremely proud of the skills as an MC and performer that I have developed through the years. DJing is my main passion, but karaoke hosting has even taken that to another level, something I never could have imagjned. I have learned along the way not to underestimate the process. It all takes time, but before I knew it I brought out skills that I never knew I had. I think these skills set me apart because of my knowledge of music and also my engagement with my crowd. I truly enjoy making people happy through music and If I can put smiles on faces and make people forget their problems even for a few hours, then my job is done.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whenever I have friends who visit me here in Miami we definitely have to hit the beach -at some point. One of my favorite beach locations is Sunny Isles Beach and in particular a restaurant that’s right on the beach called “Tahiti Beach”. The food and service are great and you walk right after a great lunch into the water a few feet away.

For shopping and other great restaurants I like to go to the Aventura Mall. Recently ranked the #1 mall in America it is a big mall with great shops and fine restaurants and continues to expand. For nightlife Miami has some of the best bars and nightclubs in the country. The Wynwood area of Miami is the art district which also boasts many great restaurants and bars, including the new Sweet Caroline where I DJ/Host Karaoke nights on Wednesdays.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My passion and dedication to music and ultimately my success in the music business could have never been possible without the love, patience and encouragement from my mother Lucila Batista may she rest in peace. I lived in a small 1 bedroom apartment with my mother for many many years and definitely drove her crazy sometimes with my loud music and the constant thump thump thump of the bass from my speakers. She bought me my first records and I was able to get my first DJ set up because of her.
