We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ AFRICA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DJ, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Ever since I was a little boy, I loved music. Anything that made sounds/beats would grab my attention. I remember when i was little, I would grab empty buckets and use them as drums to make beats. I was surprised because nobody in my family has a music background and that’s how my curiosity in music began.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My talent shows through music. I made a name for myself by mixing and creating mash ups with different genres, which set me apart from other DJs. Something I will always be proud of is being able to play for 44th president of the United States of America, Barack Obama. I’ve been perfecting my craft since I was 16, its been a long road since then but every opportunity has been a lesson. Never stop working on yourself and doing what you love. Ive been blessed to have created a career out of a hobby. Find your passion and keep working until you fulfill your dreams. One of the greatest joys in life is doing what you love.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you ever have the opportunity to visit the 305, get ready for a hell of a ride. We have so many options to choose from. For starters, my personal favorites: The sugar factory, its a fun option for families. If you’re in the mood for sushi; Sushi Sake. A Miami staple; Versailles, If you’re a meat lover like me, i recommend a brand new spot “Carnicero” it has great food with affordable prices. If youre in South Beach, check out “Drunken Dragon” its a low-key spot with a Korean fusion. Definitely have to visit Little Havana; Calle Ocho. Its full of restaurants, bars, landmarks.
At night you should check out Wynwood, I recommend; Electric Lady, Pilos and Racket. Oasis has a variety of food trucks and you might be able to catch a show while you’re there. If you’re close to the beach, you should check out LIV another Miami staple.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Firstly, I would like to give a shoutout to Julio JR “El Hombre Gozadera” a dear friend of mine, who gave me my first radio debut. He always believed in me & supported me. May he rest in peace.

Lastly, to my mentor, role model and father figure, Emilio Estefan.
Emilio and Gloria Estefan chose me to be their DJ, at the hottest international club Miami has ever seen.. Bongos Cuban Cafe. Till this day we have continued our relationships and have been apart of many milestones for them and their family.
