We had the good fortune of connecting with Donnell Moses and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Donnell, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued the passion of becoming a Music Producer because when I was a little I was around my family a lot, especially my Mother. Whenever I was her she played tons of R&B, mainly Mary J. Blidge which intrigued me with groovy and soulful type music. Around my grandmother, I was always playing with my cousin who lived with her, and my uncle who also lived with her would always play rock music which intrigued me the most because it seemed way different than the other types I listened to and I loved it, my favorite artists were Phil Collins, Bon Jovi, and AC/DC. Every time I was around my father he would play Rap/Hip-hop, mostly Young Jeezy or Rick Ross. My father also had a keyboard that caught my eye the most every day when I was little because he was also a music producer. When I heard all of these genres of music I liked the lyrics but I loved the beats, I would always listen to instrumentals to feel the music, and I even tried making beats on many iPad apps. This continued all throughout Elementary school to high school until 2018 when I first installed FL Studio. My most recent inspiration as to why I pursued this passion was the Kanye West Documentary because I come from a background similar and like him, I choose to be bigger than what I was bestowed upon.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work on my music production, it is starting to get separated from others, what separates it the most is the catchy, spooky, and vintage vibes you tend to get from it because of the things I used to listen to. I am most proud of finding my own style because it took a while, it’s very hard to do so since I listen to lots of inspired music. I got to where I am professionally because of my hard work and dedication, I used to stay up till 3 am making beats and I still do, it became addicting because I really enjoy doing it so much. I overcame the challenges of sleep deprivation and not focusing on my classes by balancing out my schedule. I am still in school and I am in college currently going to Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, taking highly advanced classes like Calculus 3. I needed time to study while still making beats which were extremely difficult because I wanted to make beats every second of the day, there are times in classes or out in public when I have a melody or beat in my head that I want to lay down. The lessons I learned along the way are that you never failed until you give up or quit, every morning you usually have two options which are to continue to sleep with your dreams or wake up and go chase them, and you aren’t looking for success because success is looking for you. I want the world to know that my story does not differ from the average African American, but I want them to know nothing was handed to me, and I did go through things that I think no child should go through. Also, I want them to know that you do have a choice in life and I choose to be bigger and not fall into the cycle of my environment.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would take them down south towards Miami, because that tends to grab the attention of people. The beach would be perfect because unlike myself who goes to the beach regularly, they do not and could find the beach magnificent and one of the greatest experiences. I would also take them to take them downtown to eat, drink, and probably watch a movie. One of the interesting places I would take them is the Versace Mansion on South Beach.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out to my mother, father, and uncle for introducing me to different types of genres of music, and especially my father because he is trying his best to get me connections to local and mainstream artists in my areas like coochise and $not. I would also like to shout out my day one friends that I have known for over a decade, Javery and Ta’Shawn, I have known them since my childhood and we’ve been like family ever since. They help me improve my beats by telling me if they are headed in the right direction or not. They also get me connections with artists they know personally and help motivate me to the next level. Without them, I wouldn’t really have a sense of if my beats are usable and hot or not.
