We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorlene Pierre and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dorlene, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own brand was realizing my niche how much I loved swimwear, my passion to create and what I could bring to the table. I’m probably the most supportive person I always encourage others to pursue their passion. I’ve always been the behind the scene person, helping model a brand, giving creative ideas and just wanting to help in any form. I realized I’m always there to support someone but at times felt I wasn’t getting that in return, nevertheless it never stopped me from being that person to everyone. It just sparked more of a drive to push myself and create something I can give that same energy towards. My love for swimwear started around the time I was dancing professionally for the NHL and then modeling and being a fitness brand ambassador for a sports nutrition company back in 2013. I have been blessed to be in calendars and travel due to these experiences. I started working for the fitness/ swim company and became more behind the scenes of production, and that is what sparked the passion for swimwear. While working there I began to start looking into starting my own business, I’ve always wanted to create and be apart of the fashion world but knew it wouldn’t be with clothing. So, I began looking into how and what it takes to start a swimwear brand and gather all my ideas of my vision.
What should our readers know about your business?
How did I get to where I am today in my business, I would say SHOWING UP & CONSISTENCY every single day. I would be lying if I said this has been an easy journey because it hasn’t but I’m blessed and proud of myself for continuing as I have. My brand is still a beautiful work in progress, I’ve overcome certain challenges by actually refocusing on a lot of aspects of my business and putting in the work when and where it is needed. Before I was just jumping into things and not really carefully planning out my moves strategically so I’m definitely thankful for the trial and error. Lessons I’ve learned along the way would be stop doubting myself and stop letting my insecurities get the best of me. I have a great concept, energy and drive to offer, timing and patience is key so with every lesson in this business I keep growing. What I want the world to know about me & my brand; this is truly my heart and passion I believe in this brand so much and only want to produce a brand that women feel confident and can relate to my story. I’m just a Haitian girl from Miami who wants to create a brand that inspires, create opportunities and create amazing swimwear!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Ohh man there is so many dope spots here in Miami/ Fort Lauderdale area! if my bestfriend was in town, during the day we would have to go down to South Beach and catch a vibe down by the beach get some drinks & eat. For dinner we would go to Gyu Kaku in Brickell for some Japanese BBQ. For the rest of the week we would have a pool day then dinner/ casino vibes at the Hardrock Casino in Hollywood, have Juicy Crab night, hit up Roco’s Taco for Taco Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale, bowling night, we would have to stop by on a Thursday to Chezkatu for her amazing Pate Kode in Miramar. We would hit a few lounges Velvet Lounge in Sunrise and Da Cave in Miami both have themed nights like; R&B nights or Karaoke nights. We definitely hitting strip clubs it’s apart of the Miami experience lol! The weekend we either having a pool day at the Mondrian in Miami, boat day, hitting brunch spots, going to Wynwood look at art and get some great food and having a dinner night at Houston’s. But to be real, I’m always trying to go on a vacation lol so I would push more for a trip to an island or city we’ve never been to.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m blessed to be surround by people who have started businesses and seeing their drive and passion into their business push me. I would say my sister and my bestfriend (practically my other sister), both have started businesses and their drive and determination has pushed me to keep going no matter how frustrating or difficult things get. Any questions, swim suit selections or just encouragement they both are there to get me all the way together. I have the support from my close friends and boyfriend; each an every one of them give me the help when needed and extra encouragement.
