We had the good fortune of connecting with Duaini Walden and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Duaini, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am originally from Hyattsville, Maryland, I was born there bounced around there and NY. I have resided in West Palm Beach for over 20 years so I consider myself from here. I identify as Caribbean American. My upbringing mirrored one of that many Caribbean American children whose parents were immigrants. My upbringing contributed to how I show up and identify as in the world both welcomed and not. Tenacity and resilience is second nature to me. I went through a lot & had to tough it out on my own a lot. From being the black sheep, being poor, not having real support lead me to retain these traits through trial & error experience. These character traits contributed to my passion and desire to become a nurse. Helping others while proving a career of stability and growth are all I desired as a child. Despite the many challenges I’ve faced in childhood, those challenges cultivated me into the young professional I am today.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is “The Pink Womb FL”. It is an “alternative” maternal health service. I am a doula, primarily focused in postpartum. I do placenta encapsulation. I have a passion for supporting others and contributing to their mental health being in a positive space at all times. I care a lot about my clients and enjoy educating them about their bodies & what they’re capable of. I’m excited about furthering my education and becoming a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner focused primarily on the minority and educating them about pregnancy and what I feel is the most important part.. Post Partum. I originally was painting houses. Yes, I am a painter. I was painting to support myself while I was in nursing school because I was able to work around my school schedule. I like being my own boss. I had a high interest in OB/L&D so I decided to begin my journey as a Doula and loved what I knew about consuming the placenta and wanted to tell everyone about it! It was not easy to kick off because most minority women in the states aren’t very much educated about the benefits of placenta consumption post partum or even what a doula really is for. I’ve made a dent but I have a ways to go. I’d like to the world to know that I’m going to make a mark in maternal health services slowly but surely. I’m looking to expand into an all inclusive birthing center and am currently building a team to educate and provide the best care.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In the PBC area.. The Ben Hotel for happy hour.. Batch in WPB for brunch on Sunday or Throw Social in Delray. Downtown delray is an area I’ve recently have become quite acquainted with and would definitely take my friend there. There’s also a plus because the beach is also nearby. Throw Social definitely has been making it’s mark so I would 100% include that in the mix.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shout out my cousin Alexa. She deserves so much credit and all the recognition. We were all we had at one point & many points growing up and I’m happy to have maintained the relationship we do. Without her continuous support, I honestly don’t think I would’ve had the discipline nor confidence to progress and press forward to obtain and fully achieve my goals. She literally is a great person all around. She’s a blessing.
