We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica (Jessy) Obarrio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jessica, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The Hours can be long the work can be inconsistent at times and people always want to negotiate your rate. But its what fuels me. I love being a Makeup Artist its what I was meant to do and what makes me happy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think being in an industry that is artistry based or creativity based is always hard its never an easy road, its something you have to put time and by time I mean years of hard work, learning and receptive to receiving feedback. It’s not always glamorous, its again long hours, I just pushed through, I tried to be patient and little by little I kept growing and landing larger jobs and started having more consistency. My proudest moment was assisting Patrick Ta, I learned so much and was such an amazing time and gave me a push to land more celebrity based jobs. I have also met some amazing Miami Makeup Artists that I have assisted and for that I am grateful. Its all about people supporting people there is enough space in this world for all of us to be successful.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Enjoy some Acee Icees, skateboard by the pier check out local markets. Brunch it up at B Bistro owned by my friend Henry Hane, get some thai food at Lung Yai, churros at Churromania in Little Havana family owned and end the night at Betterdays for a drink where the barkeeps are spot on! If you’re visiting me come on an empty stomach!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One thing I have always tried to do is surround myself with good people, amazing friends and supporting family and partner. I feel like when I switched my career and started doing what I love everyone supported me. My boyfriend dabbles in photography and cinematography and he would spend hours taking images of my makeup looks edit videos come up with looks and concepts. My dad tells me how proud he is of me everyday and my friends are gold, they all support me and my dreams. My best friends who push me and alwsys offered their face as my canvas. I do have to give special shout out to my friend Alessa, she is the one that got me started and planted the seed, she is an amazing soul and always your biggest cheerleader. Ilde Goncalves took me under his wing and was my Mentor and guided me started me off in photoshoots and runways. Always gave me insight and feedback on how I can improve as an artist. One thing in life is that you learn everyday and groe each step of the way. Im grateful for my opportunites and I will continue to grow and chase my dreams.
