We had the good fortune of connecting with Elizabeth Seligman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Elizabeth, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I started my business at the age of 48. For over 30 years I had worked in the hospitality and event industry and knew this was the world I was meant to be in, I guess you could say it is my passion. In all those years I always worked for a company or other small business owners and would observe everything they did regarding to business.

I always had a dream from the time I was 18 years old of owning my own company and through the years fell in love with events. As I got into my 40’s after years of being a banquet captain I was intrigued about the planning process. Again, observing planners at events I thought I can do this! I was not content with where I was in my career and just knew I was meant for more and had to make the dream of that 18 year old come into fruition. Hence, that is how Island Life Events was created.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have been blessed to have surrounded myself with vendors (friendors:) who are the best in the industry. I was scared when I took the leap of owning my own business but always had such a great support system from my family, friends and fellow vendors that have given me the strength and tenacity to keep growing. Just staying focused, being able to quickly adjust to new trends and be open minded has been some of the secrets to our success.

What started as a small, simple event planning company based in the Florida Keys , is now a luxury event company, creating events all over South Florida and beyond. We are so excited about our business growth and honored to have the clientele we have attracted.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
From Palm Beach to Islamorada there are so many wonderful places to visit. I would do a bit of island hopping, starting with a stay at The Colony Palm Beach, lunch at Swiftys and a stroll down Worth Ave. Then a must see visit to Vizcaya and the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. Then head south to the beautiful Florida Keys, and stay at one of our favorite resorts, Playa Largo, Bakers Cay, Postcard Inn, Islander, and of course the iconic Cheeca Lodge and ending the whirlwind trip with a fabulous dinner and sunset at Pierre’s.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Yes, Cathy Knowles, Cathy taught me everything I know from the world of banquets and I truly would not be where I am today if she had not taken me under her wing.
