We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Ames and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I’d say there are three philosophies that have served me well in my business:
> Be willing to start something before I’m ever “ready”
> Be wiling to pivot + let go when things aren’t working out.
> Have the courage to act on your dreams without knowing if they will work out
I used to play everything safe; I waited until I had all the facts and logical reasons lined up to take action in business. I did endless research and waited until I had the confidence to take action. I asked for everyone’s opinions on what I should do and waited for opportunities to come to me. I waited for someone to knock on my door and offer me my dream job. I held onto projects and careers long after I knew they weren’t right for me anymore. I would dream of different circumstances, but never took any action to get there.
I was living in fear and struggled to leave my comfort zone.
But over time, I started adopting those three philosophies and everything changed. Things started to shift for me when I …
> Went back to get certified as a Nutritional Therapist (not knowing where that would lead).
> Moved to a city where I knew no one.
> Started a podcast while on a walk (literally!) with no experience or knowledge of what I was doing.
> Worked two years on an online course and decided it wasn’t right for me and scrapped the entire thing.
> Launched & sold my signature online course before creating any content or ever working in the software program I was supposed to be teaching in the course.
> Launched a subscription box without knowing anything about subscription boxes
And all of these pivots, “failures”, and lessons learned led me to where I am today, teaching women how to build their own online courses.
You need to be willing to take the chance to put yourself out there, look dumb, and even quit something that you’ve put your heart and soul into. The only way to learn in business is to get your hands messy and to try it. You’ll never know if you’ll be good at something until you start. You need to test, try, and fail often.
Plus, you always have Google when you get stuck 🙂
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an online course coach and mentor for women. My specialty is supporting holistic practitioners, nutritional therapists, and those in the health and wellness space (although I also have other niches in the course ie: skincare and makeup artists!)
I am a Functional Nutritional Therapist (FNTP) and my passion is to educate on holistic health and make learning about your body and your health more accessible. Many people are dealing with chronic illnesses and are searching and begging for answers to their health challenges. This is where online courses come in! People can access the knowledge, expertise, and experience of these holistic practitioners / nutritional therapists but usually at a much lower cost than 1:1 AND the practitioner is able to reach a broader audience without burning out or only seeing 1:1 clients.
It’s the most fulfilling feeling knowing that through my work, I am able to support these women to build their businesses AND they are impacting women’s health and wellness to bring healing to the world.
I’m proud of the courses my students are creating! Some examples of my students’ courses:
> Preconception / Fertility Nutrition
> Postpartum anxiety and depression
> Postpartum / breastfeeding course
> Mindset around food
> Gut health
> Hormone Balancing
> Foundational nutrition (without diet rules)
> Nourishment for motherhood
> Nervous system regulation
> Discovering your business offer
> Confidence course for teens and tweens
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first beta students for my online course! They trusted me and believed in my vision before any content was ever created. I will NEVER forget the faith they put into me. They encouraged me as much as I encouraged them. They have given me the confidence to keep going and not give up on this dream.
