Meet Erika Mayor | Public Relations & Marketing Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Erika Mayor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erika, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I feel very lucky to have started my public relations and marketing career in the nonprofit space. I loved working for some of the most recognizable and respected organizations in the country, and in the process learned an incredible amount from these entities. As my family grew, it was becoming more and more challenging to be a mom and travel a good majority of the year. So when I was nine months pregnant with my second child, I decided to make a drastic change. I quit my role as Associate Director of Florida at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and took a leap of faith. I wanted to spend quality time with my new baby and my three year old and see what fate would bring. Crazy enough, I got a call two months into my maternity leave from a colleague looking for a consultant. Then another colleague contacted me a couple weeks later, and before I knew it, I had become an independent practitioner. I didn’t set off in search of being my own boss, but ten years later I can look back and know I would not change a thing!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started my consulting business in 2013 when not many colleagues were going on their own. Working from home was a foreign idea to many, and PR was just merging with digital marketing in a complimentary relationship. My years working in-house at large nonprofits gave me a unique understanding of my clients needs. I have walked the walk and can understand the stressors and challenges nonprofits face each day. This has given me an edge in working with nonprofits and creating a niche within the South Florida market. There is no better feeling than working with a charity who has an amazing mission and is really doing good in our community. When you work with charities it ignites your passion and motivates you to go the extra mile in order to secure outstanding media coverage and enhance their brand visibility. Sometimes as business owners, we take on clients that meet the budget and criteria, but are not a joy to work with. I’ve learned to balance that with clients that I truly love to work with and support. Charities in South Florida are facing difficult times and I feel proud to do my part in getting their voices heard.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Miami has plenty of amazing food and Instagram-worthy places, but some of the best food you can eat are from local restaurants. I love Peruvian food, and Miami has some of the best. My favorite local restaurant is Dr. Limon – any of their locations throughout Miami. For BBQ lovers, I would take them to Shorty’s. Every time family comes to visit they ask to eat short ribs at Shorty’s – their original sauce is really the best.
For an escape from the city I always take friends and family visiting Miami to Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden. It truly is a gem not enough people visit or even know about.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to recognize Dr. Rudolph Moise, owner and medical director of Comprehensive Medical Aesthetics in Miami. Prior to becoming a physician, he served as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force for more than 21 years, earning the rank of colonel, the highest position awarded to an American of Haitian descent at that time. He is a great example of an immigrant dedicating his life to his adopted country and serving the community though his work and philanthropy.
