We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Rosenberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking can be essential for growth. In my experience, it’s always the scary stuff that’s way outside your comfort zone the brings the most growth and reward with it. The hard part is getting yourself to take the leap. I’ve done all of my best learning and growing when I’ve decided to take risks whether it be uprooting my life and making a big move or quitting my job to start my own business (while being a full-time grad school student). Any time the idea of something makes me uncomfortable, I have more incentive to make myself do it. Sure, it can be absolutely terrifying and overwhelming, but you always come out stronger and more confident. Taking a risk means that there will always be the chance that it doesn’t work out how you expected it to. But hey, the absolute worst thing that can happen is you learn from it, and then you try again, or you pivot. What it comes down to is finding your “why”. For me, my why is getting to live every day on my own terms, in my own happiness, doing what I love. And that definitely outweighs the scariness of taking a risk. One of my favorite quotes says “Perseverance is not about believing you won’t give up until you win. Perseverance is about believing you won’t give up when you don’t win.” – Unknown
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a personal trainer currently based out of New York City. As we all know, 2020 threw a ton of curveballs at us. One of those being that my (like many others) job shut down. I was a personal trainer at a gym here in Manhattan, and when my gym’s doors closed, I needed to pivot… quickly. My entrepreneurial spirit started form young age, and I have had dreams here and there of owning my own various businesses. I took this as an opportunity to do just that. There was a demand for virtual training options, and I had the ability and the passion to make it happen. So, I did it. I officially started Body By Er LLC, my online personal training business, in July of 2020. Now while this all sounds fine and dandy, it was way easier said than done. I am a 24-year old grad school student and I had absolutely NO idea how to start or run a business. This journey has taught be a lot about myself, my limits, and my capability. It has shown me the true value of taking “messy action’, and the real meaning of perseverance and believing in yourself. What it all comes down to is: the reality of chasing your dreams and creating the life you want is not easy. Nothing is handed to you, and there’s hours of research, overwhelm, learning foreign things, second guessing yourself, debating giving up, re-working your plan, oh, and LOTS of coffee. But at the end of the day, it so worth it. I love what I do because, yes, it has given me freedom: with time, with money, with location. I can travel, and take time when I need to, and spend time with my family. But also, I love what I do because of the ability it has given me to help others achieve their goals from anywhere. All you need is a computer and an internet connection. I pride my business on individualization and design each program specifically for my client’s goals, & needs. No cookie cutter programming from me. It’s more than just personal training for me. Its education, building solid foundations, reaching (and exceeding) goals. It’s helping my clients realize their own capability, making them feel confident and setting them up for success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many fun things to do in the city! I live right by the Hudson, and love to go for runs/walks by the water. We would definitely do that, and of course go to the gym a couple of times. I would take her around to all of my favorite places. My usual “go-to” spot is West Village. They have so many fun restaurants, bars, and shops, and Chelsea Market is right there. I am a huge fan of oysters, so we would definitely be going to Cull & Pistol for some happy hour oysters. There is such an amazing food scene here, so we would try out some of our favorite restaurants (Boucherie, Bar Piti, Terra to name few!), and of course sprinkle in a couple of rooftop bars and wine bars as well! I am also a huge fan of coffee, and would take her around to a couple of my favorite spots (Foragers, Birch, Kobrick Coffee, and Think to name a few!) After a few days in the city, I would love to take her upstate (not too far!). So we’d hop on a train and head up to around New Palz to do some hiking (we are big fans of outdoor adventures!), and definitely make a visit to a vineyard or two.. they are absolutely stunning there. Other than that, we are big fans of chill/quality time so we would definitely factor in a night or two of just staying in, relaxing, and watching a good show.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my best friend, Bryn Westerlind, for recommending me for this! She is also a young and aspiring entrepreneur/business owner who is so talented, hardworking, and passionate about her job as an interior designer. I also would like to dedicate this shoutout to my amazing girlfriend, Ashley Centauro, who has been the biggest source of unwavering support. She is also a business owner/entrepreneur who has just started her own private cheffing and cooking class business. Thank you both for being the best cheerleaders, and for believing in me the most when I’m ready to give up. So proud of you both, and appreciate you more than you know.
